Golfer makes tasteless Michael Sam joke

2014 Scouting Combine
Steve Elkington makes tasteless Michael Sam joke on Twitter

Michael Sam is the NFL’s first openly gay draft prospect. (Matthew Visinsky/Icon SMI)

All eyes have been on Michael Sam at the combine, as the NFL’s first openly gay draft prospect attempts to prove himself to be (as he put it) Michael Sam, the football player, not just Michael Sam the gay football player.

The reaction to Sam’s decision to come out as gay has been largely positive, but he’s had his share of critics, as well. That group includes professional golfer Steve Elkington, who tweeted the following “joke” Tuesday morning.

This isn’t Elkington’s first ill-advised attempt at humor. Earlier this month he made a misogynistic comment on Twitter about a female golf writer (and then apologized, saying that he had “been drinking”); and before that, in late 2013, he made a light-hearted remark about a fatal helicopter crash in Glasgow.

The lesson here? Think before your tweet, Steve Elkington.

Despite what the libtard stooges at ESPN tell you, homosexuals are not saints who walk on hallowed ground. They are not above reproach and are definitely not above being made fun of. Get over it you PC cultural marxists.

Wow! Was that really bad? What if he would've made a comment about Sam going up against a TIGHT END! Now that would've been bad?

Could've been worse..............like maybe the corn hole toss

Bet this bigot would not dare say that to Sam's face

Argh, I hate bullies!  Now everyone bash me for having an opinion against a small percentage of the population that for whatever reason is making headlines left and right due to one NFL episode.

He's Australian - he can't help it.

Steve Elkington was once a great golfer. Now he is just irrelevant.

No, SI and Steve Elkington, the lesson here is not to be a horrible human being.

Eek. All the liberals are collectively getting the vapors. Just wondering, when did all the writers at SI turn into flowers?

"The lesson here? Think before your tweet, Steve Elkington."   Rule of thumb is, if you tweet something offensive, make it funny.  Fail.

It is totally obvious that the only way we can have justice here is to have Elkington put to death.  I'm not talking about anything quick and neat either.  I'm talking about the ending of Braveheart but cranked up a few notches.  oh yea, and his whole family can't be spared, they need to go as well.  If you don't agree with my stance, you are a bigoted homophobe and should be denied the right to vote or own property.

First of all I support Michael Sam and gay rights. But the fact that people are getting upset over a lame little joke like this is just beyond stupid. Everybody needs to lighten the f*** up.

Elkington- If you don't have anything nice or good to say about someone then keep your big mouth shut!

Michael Sam most likely had multiple reasons for proclaiming his homosexuality publicly and it would not surprise me if one of them was to challenge the NFL. After his mediocre performance at the combine it's evident he hasn't got the skills beyond a 5th to 7th round draftee. Now by "coming out" he has told the NFL, "I dare you not to draft me because you are opening yourself up a for discrimination law suit." If you think this is far fetched just consider that any open head coaching position available is now mandated to have a minority candidate, regardless if the OWNER is locked in on a particular person.

Michael Sam is gay??  Havn't heard a word about it.  The media must be trying to conceal it from us.  Kudos to Elk, that was funny.

Get a grip guys. The real test of acceptance of a group is when harmless humor is taken in stride. Gays (or any other identity political group of the moment) are not helped when their media legions treat them like second class citizens who need to be protected.

If you are a fair and unbiased person, the tweet was harmless and a little bit funny.  People make fun of my group all the time.  I take it in stride and if the quip is funny I laugh along.

That's actually pretty funny, so my guess is Elkington didn't make it up, he just repeated it.

And I'm no homophobe: m'mom's gay. Funny is funny, peeps, and I bet Sam would've laughed if he hadn't been so exhausted by the Combine drills.

If gays cannot have a sense of humor about themselves that would say they are insecure.

@TheDistrict  Yeah, who's the more horrible person: The person who thinks something is weird, or the person who finds it morally necessary to belittle anyone with an opinion different from their own?

@TheDistrict  they are or aren't....a bad human being is just bad, they can learn to control their behavior, but I don't think most people who are bad people can become good people. Ya know, leopard and stripes, the old saying.

@laurie66bay Disney which owns ESPN is now headed by a a flaming uncloseted homosexual. Disney ultimately writes the checks for these on-air stooges. I'll let you do the math.

Pretty sure it's all down hill from here.

@laurie66bay  I'm pretty sure you're questioning your sexuality. Bigots are the biggest source of closet homosexuals.

@pickle  I doubt you would "lighten the f**" up if your rights were trampled on.

@Don12  ok........, assuming Michael Sam had any form of legal standing, which he wouldn't, why would he go after the NFL?  It would be the 30 teams that didn't draft him, not the NFL. But he wouldn't have a case.

TheDistrict

@Don12  That's so ridiculous. There's no chance in heck that he will launch a discrimination lawsuit. Take your unwarranted paranoia elsewhere.

donlon2006
donlon2006

@Don12  PRECISELY!! He's riding the popular gay wave. No one cares that he's gay. I'm sure there are plenty gays in college and pro football. Show your skills, not your sexuality.

Don12

@tarheel2 By the way, did Sam know about the "joke" and get offended or did it take the media to stampede to his social networking to make sure he knew about it?

TheDistrict
TheDistrict

@dacrimmins  That's so laughably ridiculous. The true test of acceptance of a group is equal rights.

evetsyarsh

@Jeif @TheDistrict i don't belittle those with different opinions per se, or even those with morally indefensible thoughts....but those who take the time and effort to send out morally indefensible ideas do deserve belittling, and that is what the 1st amendment is for - the public airing of ideas so that good ideas can be shared, and bad ideas can be belittled so one day they will hopefully disappear and we as a society can evolve....

@TheDistrict @IdDoHannahStorm  Nah, he enlightened you as you began to realize that people who are against Homosexuality are being unjustly condemned.

@TheDistrict @pickle  Yeah...how dare anyone have an opinion which they have a right to be entitled to!

@Don12 @tarheel2 Good point.  Sam himself was probably laughing at the joke while the media were getting stirred up.

@Jeif @TheDistrict@pickleyou have the right to have a bigoted opinion, and we all have the right to condemn you as one...take ownership and repeat after me "I am a bigot"...look in the mirror when you say it, really OWN it...and be Proud
