‘More menacing skull’ highlights Tampa Bay Buccaneers giant logo on helmet

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

When Tampa Bay talks about an “enhanced logo” on a new helmet, what it really means is an enlarged logo. As Warren Sapp unveiled the “enhanced logo” and new helmet Thursday evening on the NFL Network, we saw the Buccaneers flag grow and the face mask turn chrome against a darker shade of pewter. But not much else.

The logo retains the skull over swords of the version that first appeared in 1997, but does offer a more vibrant red, as Bucs’ defensive star Gerald McCoy says. The skull also grew a bit more “menacing.” We did get a slight change to the base color, which now includes a darker pewter that shades as it moves across the lid. The darkness likely shelves the “creamsicle” motif of old yet again.

When the Buccaneers opened up their aesthetic identity in 1976 they offered us a red, white and “Florida orange” combination. It was since lovingly — by some, anyway — dubbed the creamsicle. In 1997 the Bucs ditched Buccaneer Bruce — you know, the winking pirate with the fancy plume — and his soft coloring in favor of a new logo and color scheme of red, pewter and black. That has remained Tampa’s main look, dominated by a sparkly pewter helmet, with the occasional creamsicle throwback tossed in.

But in 2013 Tampa Bay wasn’t allowed to use its throwback uniform set because of a new concussion-centric rule that didn’t allow teams to use one-off helmets. The Florida orange and white uniform and pants just didn’t match well with a pewter and red helmet, ending any hopes of throwback games. By sticking with the pewter, the fancy plume of Buccaneer Bruce may stay on the shelf a little longer.

Sapp and McCoy praised the large flag and McCoy especially enjoyed the chrome mask. He called it “very unique to the Bucs.”

Now that we have the enlarged logo and chrome-tipped helmet, we can expect to see the new wordmark also unveiled when the Bucs offer up their new uniform set March 5, even if Florida orange doesn’t take center stage.

There is nothing "menacing" about that helmet. It's just bigger target practice for opposing players. Scrap this whole idea and we'll pretend it didn't happen.

What a bunch of negative wussies.  I like the new graphics, and believe you will learn to respect what coach does with the Bucs this year.  There are a lot of teams I am not fond of, but see not need to be so negative about them.  You are a bunch of insecure dudes.

Just a skull and cross-swords please. The flag and all the other stuff is bogus.

Not surprised they adopted Manchester United's red and black colors.  More opportunities for cross-marketing.

Why is this Packer boy running his mouth still? The Bucs are 2-1 against the Packers since Rodgers took over  and 1-3 vs them in the past 10 years LOL.

I hope Sapp had them change to a darker color pewter also in the uniform pants to hide the embarrassing a$$ sweat stains the fat guys always end up with half way hrough the game.

This as bad as the new NBA t-shirt look......strictly "arena"....change for the sake of change. But then, every team can't be the Yankees or Dodgers.

I rather like it, although I would have preferred a large pirate head on the helmet instead.

Note to Brian and Joel Glazer. It's going to take much more than just a larger logo.

They should go back to the orange and the guy with a feather in his hat and a knife in his mouth.

Meh.  It's ok.  Not a disaster, IMO.  But the flag looks weird, it's just too big (which is, I believe, what she said).  I kind of like the chrome facemask, but the helmet is now basically just black, even if they want to call it "pewter".  Too many teams now have a black color scheme.  I think the Bucs had a somewhat unique look, but going to black just makes it more generic now.

I don't mind black for, say, a third jersey, but it seems the default these days is to go to black because it "looks tough", or whatever.

wouldve been cooler if they had Johnny Depp's mug on the flag instead of the skeleton

Ask the Raiders if a "menacing" helmet logo wins games...

Looks like a decal.  Why is the football orange?  What's with the idiotic sword?  Why are there cartoonish rips on the flag?  The scale does not fit the helmet.  Looks menacing?  No, it looks foolish.  Why?  It's the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, that's why.

"More menacing skull."  Eek!  I'm so intimidated!  Can't imagine the effect it'll have on opponents!

@ChrisMcCoy  You mean the Raiders logo? Sorry that belongs in Silver & Black!

@jamie11230  Yeah, because no team in the history of sports worldwide has ever used the two colors together... groundbreaking!

@magicvilas   Zombie Al Davis was ALWAYS pissed. Look up the term "pissed" in the dictionary and there's probably a picture of Al next to it. If there isn't, there should be!

On those rare occasions when Al wasn't pissed, Pete Rozelle or Paul Tagiabue were pissed because Al was suing them. It's what he lived for.

Haha! You're just a silly, angry person. And the frankly the packers are pretty average.

@AF Whigs If you see it in the light, it doesn't look black. In these pictures it's just reflecting the background, but it has more of that slightly gold look in the NFL Network video.

They said "apparently", and then, "and 3 superbowls." And then they asked who you were, so they could comment on one of the many stories about you, then we checked, and you're nobody.

@CubanMustGo  More likely a graphic artist / designer.  Clearly someone who does not watch football.  Probably a woman.  They screw up everything.

@MidwestGolfFan  A player in the NFL might find an opponent's helmet "menacing"?

Uh, NO.
