Report: Matt Cassel plans to void Vikings deal, test free agency

Matt Cassel helped the Vikings to three wins over the 2013 season’s final five weeks and he was set to earn $3.7 million while possibly challenging for the starting job in 2014. Instead, he’s going to test free agency.

As reported by 1500ESPN.com and seconded by multiple outlets, Cassel plans to exercise his option to void the final season of the two-year contract he signed last March. The initial report indicates that Cassel may re-sign with the Vikings, so the move could be aimed at adding longer-term stability to his NFL future.

There might be some opportunity for him on the open market, though. Cassel performed fairly well after inheriting Minnesota’s QB job — one formerly held by Christian Ponder and, briefly, Josh Freeman. He finished with 1,807 yards passing, 11 touchdowns, nine interceptions and a 60.2 completion percentage. None of those numbers are particularly eye-popping, but they did put him in line to be in the mix for the Vikings next season.

Minnesota holds the No. 8 pick in the upcoming draft and may opt to use that selection on a quarterback, with the Ponder ship having sailed.

Cassel came to the Vikings last offseason as Ponder’s backup after melting down as Kansas City’s starter. After a strong 2008 season replacing an injured Tom Brady in New England, Cassel signed a six-year, $63 million contract with the Chiefs. He had just one winning season in four tries there and was a combined 4-12 over 2011-12.

The 2014 QB free-agent class should be intriguing, if not overwhelmingly talented. Cassel, who will turn 32 in May, could wind up as the cream of the crop over veterans like Michael Vick, Josh McCown and Chad Henne.

he will reunite with Texans head coach Bill O'Brien. Texans will trade  first pick.

If I were him I would get out of Minnesota with the new acquisition of Josh Freeman and Ponder its a QB circus, plus new outside stadium ..if he plays were its cold he be better off going back playing back-up to Brady

He only wins when he plays for the "cheater"

He should keep his money and return to Minnesota.  He's never going to get that much on the open market.

Matt Cassell "cream of the crop"? This article lost any credibility it ever had with that statement.

It's definitely the worse Free Agency QB Class in recent memory.   But to say Matt Cassell is cream of the crop over Vick is ridiculous.   Despite how injury prone Vick is, he's leaps and bounds more talented than Matt Cassell.

And it's not like Cassell is that much younger.  He's a whopping 2 years younger.

I don't see any competitive team seeing any of those guys as anything but a back-up. Paying a guy more than a million to hold the clipboard is dumb.

Vikings, Browns and Raiders.  You have to stop burning top draft picks every few years on first round QB's.  Trade your picks down and create a great roster and QB will take care of itself.  Look at the NFC West - 3 great teams that start with defense and have Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick and an ancient free agent Carson Palmer at QB.   You don't have to have a top 5 or top 10 pick at QB.

Vick to the Vikings.   Calling to now

Vick and AD with the zone read.    And explosive WR in Patterson.   Add a Sammy Watkins and that's the most explosive offensive at the skill player positions in the league

He's an idiot!!  He is not that good of a QB and there are very limited opportunities with other teams for him.  He should have stayed put and earned a paycheck.

He should go to Tampa or the Jets. Glennon and Geno will be on short leashes.

@CousinVinny75 Vick is more talented but I want Cassell over Vick.   If you bring in Vick as a starter, which is crazy, you will need a backup that is just as good because you know Vick will not last the season and their is a good chance he would miss most of the season.   Cassell has the same chance of playing the whole year as most QBs outside of anybody named Eli Manning .

Raiders have a qb..McGloin showed enough promise that I could see giving him the full reps as starter throughout the off season into the season and signing a cassel as a back up to him but with this move Cassel has intentions of starting and if there ever were a team naiive enough to give him starter money it would be the Browns.

@CousinVinny75 As a Vikings fan I love that idea. I've been wanting them to go after Vick the last couple years. Sure he's injury prone, but his upside is worth the risk. The only thing I would add to your scenario is that if they can't get Watkins, I'd love to see them get Marquise Lee.

@CousinVinny75  yeah except Vick is a injury prone turnover machine who still thinks he's fast

It's as weak a free agent QB crop as I can remember. He'll get paid.

@PackersFanNumeroUno @RayIsBipolar  I would like to have the guy as my backup behind an established starter so the local media doesn't call for a switch every time a bad pass is thrown but that is it for Cassell. If your team is basing its future and fortune on his right arm then get ready for a long season.

CousinVinny75

@kyyled5 @CousinVinny75Isn't that about Andrew Luck's career numbers right now.    BTW, Vick makes up for his completion percentage with his high YPA last year.
