Champ Bailey ‘not done playing football,’ open to moving to safety

Champ Bailey isn’t ready to walk away.

“I’m not done playing football,” Bailey said, per the Denver Post. “So I feel like I’m going to give myself another shot next year.”

In the days leading up to the Super Bowl, Bailey, 35, dismissed the notion of moving from cornerback to safety, a natural progression when players lose a step or two.

“Most corners at my age either retire, stink it up or they move to safety. History says that’s the way it plays out,” Bailey told reporters at Media Day. “I’m not going to be running a 4.1 like I did when I was 22, but I also know I’m a lot smarter. I’ve got a lot more experience, and I still play corner. I’m not going to move anywhere any time soon.”

Following a disappointing performance in the Super Bowl, Bailey, a 15-year veteran, changed his tone.

“If it makes sense,” Bailey said when asked about a positional change, “it’s something I’d definitely look into.”

Whether that move to safety happens in Denver will depend on the finances. As Chris Burke detailed yesterday, Bailey is set to make $10 million in 2014, but none of it is guaranteed.

How long Bailey been playing for us 12 years n ur blaming him for two bad games n I didn't c him give up a td where's ur loyalty n what's better having a man hungry to play or a man just there to get paid or a rookie getting burned cuz he dont no better so for them haters your only showing how retarded u's r n what has been the problem all theses years was finding someone to match to opposite side n a qb

Broncos can't afford to spend $10 million on a over the hill corner who hasn't done much the last 2 years. Bailey cost his team against Ravens last post-season and in the SB he was a non factor. With Broncos faced with so many holes to fill, they should let Champ either walk or retire.

The Broncos flushed $20 million down the Bailey sewer the past two seasons. The only conditions I'd even invite him to camp are veteran minimum and not a dime guaranteed. Even then he would be nothing but a distraction.

The only thing that Bailey isnt done doing is getting paid. He looked like a child trying to chase his older brother down in the SB, just an embarrassing lack of speed.

He's the only one who thinks he has a career left.  He's a historically great player but, his days of playing great are history.  RETIRE, you just don't have it anymore!  (he should've retired 2 years ago)

Bailey has been playing safety for three years giving 11-14 yard cushions. Easy to make 8 yard first downs with that cushion! Head for the recliner and call it a good career! Enjoy your health and retirement.

More importantly don't be as selfish as you were this year and take up a roster spot for somebody who could actually play and help!

It will be embarrassing if the Broncos cut him and they should. Players needed trumps loyalty.

Learn from the Rockies Helton fiasco!

Yep, reality is safety and a pay cut.

Bad as Bailey got beat this season maybe retirement would be a blessing? Chump got beat badly in the Superbowl..

Baily is a all time great at his position and a classy guy, a move to safety with a huge paycut would be ideal.

Snowball? Nonsense!  The Seahawks are just much better.  They manhandled the Broncos.  Denver must play the NFC West next season and will probably lose all four games.  It is time for Denver to rebuild their soft roster and Champ Bailey need to go.

@Heath_Bell_Experience  Bailey had one of the all-time fastest 40's at the NFL scouting combine. It was actually 4.24, I believe, but he's speaking figuratively anyway. Sorry to have to educate you...

@bbc yup, because manning's 3 turnovers vs BAL didn't amount to anything.

@Steve Phillips - Heck, Helton was the only reason to attend a Rockies game last year! I agree, Chump should have been cut three years ago. Elway has made some strange decisions as GM.
