Richard Sherman fined for taunting Colin Kaepernick with choking gesture

The NFL did not let Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman off penalty-free for his enthusiastic celebration late in last Sunday’s NFC championship game against the 49ers. The league Friday announced that Sherman had been fined $7,875 for the choking gesture that he flashed at San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick after Kaepernick threw a game-clinching interception.

There were no other fines issued for the game.

Sherman’s taunt of Kaepernick was pushed to the background by his postgame interview with FOX’s Erin Andrews, in which Sherman called out 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree. FOX cut away from the interview after two questions — a move that producer Richie Zyontz defended because it “started crossing a line”.

“I saw a train coming down the tracks,” Zyontz said. “It was compelling television. And like Joe [Buck] had mentioned earlier [during the conference call] we kind of had a preview of that in our production meeting [with Sherman]. It started crossing over a line that I did not want to see us go. Erin handled it very well, but I kind of said, Let’s end this thing. He’s a good guy, an intelligent guy, an emotional guy and it was very compelling to watch. But it started getting a little dangerous for us.”

Sherman was mic’d up for the game. After he forced the decisive Kaepernick interception by tipping away a pass intended for Crabtree, Sherman ran up and offered a handshake to Crabtree while yelling “Hell of a game, hell of a game.” Crabtree pushed Sherman away by the face mask.

Mere hours after the game ended, Sherman penned a column for The MMQB, explaining his actions and what had gone on between he and the 49ers.

If someone likes to celebrate after a TD, then they should be ridicule when they choke.

Sherwood should have been fine $1 million for for his over bearing , nearly abusive interview.  If the NFL won't then the Seahawks.  You can  throw in a 3 games suspension for next season, plus ordering him to attend classes where proper conduct will be taught

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should learn from NBA commissioner David Stern who fined Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban $100,000.Goodell should have fined Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman at least this much and may be suspend him for his behavior at the end of NFC championship game and comments on live TV. Furthermore the Seattle Seahawks Coach and Owner should be held accountable for this incident.

The NFL should follow Tom Brady who stated ,” We win with graciousness, and when we lose, we could do better.”

Sherman shall get a Lombardi-- shot to his head. The Broncos will do the same gesture to him after they win their third SB title

If the NFL wanted to set an example they should have suspended him for the Superbowl. That would have been funny, see if he pulls that crap ever again if that were to happen. This guy isn't going to make a difference anyway in the Superbowl.. Peyton Manning is going to torch him. Count on it.

Humiliating someone with a choking gesture is not only unsportsmanlike but dangerous  in future encounters with the team you humiliated as the offender can be injured on purpose during a play by the other team in an innocent way.  All other gestures including celebrating an interception are acceptable with the exception of the choking gesture.

Listen its all subjective with the NFL... i find what Brett Favre did worse than some choke sign... ie pretending to take his peeenis out and face whipping his apponent after scoring a touchdown... but as usual the announcers laughed it off, because its Farve  while Randy Moss pretended to whipe his butt on the goal post and people act like Randy was Satan himself..... Sherman shouldnt pay the fine until....

I think Kaepernick should pay the fine....he's the one that choked!

In the NFL you can't choke someone, can't slash someone, can't headbutt someone, can't knee someone, can't tackle the QB and hurt him, can't chop someone, can't......

What about PINCHING someone?

SI STILL can't bring itself to just show a photo of the choking gesture, even though that was the basis of the penalty and the fine that this purports to report. -The article also spends more time recapping everything than the actual gesture that merited the penalty and fine.

Can Peyton Manning be fine for actually choking in the Super Bowl

Joe Buck is a mamma's boy. He needs to take some lessons from Ron Burgundy. He should be the poster boy of 'the whimpy burger'.

The fine reportedly will go to the charity:  Heimlich Maneuver of San Francisco and a matching contribution is headed to the Kansas City chapter.

What a joke.  Where's the fine for the Crabtree push to Sherman's facemask when he was just trying to get a handshake?  Where's the fine for the hit on Jeremy Lane when he was out of bounds?

Why $7875?  Why not $7880?  Or even $7875.37?  I think the league has some 'plainin' to do...

remember last year when tebow fans were saying the broncos would never win a superbowl with peyton?  I am sure they come out of the woodwork again if the broncos lose this game as I predict another heartbreaking bronco superbowl loss.

@nortran11The pass by Kaepernick was right on target but Sherman made a great play to knock it away.  No choking by Kaepernick but lots of idiocy after the play by Sherman. How much longer until his act goes the way of TO and becomes a big negative for his team?

@Wisconsin Death Trip Did you really just put tackling the QB in the same category as slashing and choking a person? This is why nobody takes objections to safety rules seriously. They come from idiots like you

@FOOLKILLERWhat should of been the fine for the Niners coach that hit the Seahawks special team player on the sideline? Now that was classless!

@badbeatyaYou don't offer a handshake SECONDS after you just burned a guy.

Minutes later>>>>>>>"OK",seconds.....MO.

@badbeatyaProbably the same as the classless Seahawks fans as they spat on Navarro Bowman as he was being carted off the field with a major knee injury.

@atwood.t @nortran11 No it wasn't!  Knowing Sherman is covering you that has to be a pass to the back of the endzone over the shoulder catch. Crabtree had to turn towards the QB and wait, that gave Sherman the time to jump and deflect

J57

@RickBliek@FOOLKILLERYou talk about classless? How about Shehawk fans spitting on a seriously-injured Navarro Bowman after he was carted off the field?

@nortran11 @FOOLKILLER I don't mind Richard Sherman making a fool of himself. I just want them to give him an interview after the Superbowl when they lose, that will be priceless. And what else is priceless, is Seattle bandwagon fans crying when they do indeed lose.

@Tim C @badbeatya Cam Newton called Sherman before the game and had him give Kaep the choking sign in return for kaep's classless superman taunt on Cam's own home turf. Now who's classless? paybacks a B... just like Brandon Jacobs told the truth on your $8 dollar khaki man.

@J57@badbeatyaIt was in fact 40whiner fans that did terrible things to Mr Bowman as he was leaving the field. Get your facts straight. Hawks fans are far from classless. Those that don't go after all the facts and spew lies and hatred, are classless. Sound familiar?

BbchAt-Fifty
BbchAt-Fifty

@J57@badbeatyaPlease get your facts straight. You forgot to add the classless Seahawk fans also puked, kicked, punched, and urinated on Bowman. They also went to SF and burned his house and in fact, burned entire California.

@wroger @Tim C @badbeatya Seahawks fans are the worst people on earth. Worse than the soccer hooligans in Europe. I hope you know the fans of the other 31 teams would vote you out of the league if they could.

Boogieman1281
Boogieman1281

@wroger @Tim C @badbeatya I find neither Sherman's actions nor Kaepernick mocking Newton to be classless.  Sherman was just fired up, and Newton's celebration deserves to be mocked.  I've seen him do that celebration while his team was being blown out.
