Jeremy Lane collides with member of 49ers on sideline

The San Francisco 49ers could be hearing from the league in the coming days, after a non-uniformed member of the team decked Seattle gunner Jeremy Lane on a punt. Lane was pushed into the San Francisco bench area by a pair of blockers, then stumbled and collided with one of the 49ers as he made his way back onto the field of play.

Tough to say if there was any malice behind the incident — when the person on San Francisco’s sideline notices Lane coming, he appears to jump back as if to avoid him, though he definitely lays a pretty heavy blow. That Lane was several yards over the sideline contrasts this particular play with the likes of Mike Tomlin’s sidestep on Jacoby Jones earlier this year or the Jets’ Sal Alosi’s trip of Nolan Carroll.

As of yet, no one has been able to identify successfully the Niner in question. Because of his attire and positioning on the sideline, the best guess is one of San Francisco’s inactive players or practice-squad members. Jonathan Baldwin, Eric Wright, Derek Carrier, Nick Moody, Ryan Seymour, Quinton Dial and Joe Looney all were inactive for Sunday’s game.

The play itself can be seen below, via The Big Lead. Should the 49ers have been flagged on the play or do they deserve a fine? Or was this just an innocent accident?

Identify and fine and/or suspend the dirtbag, then let Kam Chancellor or Brandon Browner deal with him. What a cheap shot.

Not only did the 9er dude have time to get out of the way but he stepped into Lane when he hits him.. then basically taunted him...  What he prevented was Lane being down on top of James when he muffed that punt.. there by preventing the possibility of Lane recovering it and a what would have been a huge play for the Hawks...  It is actually a really big deal.

Pete Carroll said they saw this during the play, and Lane was definitely hit by the 49er. I'm sure there are other camera angles that will become available shortly.

watched the gif frame by frame, this is what I see:

1- Lane is bumbling through people well before he hits the deck. just look at his right arm flailing towards the ground - he's trying to regain his balance.

2- the 49er staff member is moving away from lane just as lane's head tilts up. It looks like Lane looked up and realized he was about to run into someone

3-the staff member pivots away so Lane passes in front of him. It looks like Lane may have clipped the staff member with his own flailing left foot.

4- Lane very very obviously slips when his right foot gives way, past the orange marker. Almost looks like he rolled his ankle as he was turning to head back on the field.

My takeaway is Lane was barreling down the sideline, avoided a collision, lost his balance and lost his footing.

Funny how much attention the Richard Sherman incident has gotten in the press when this thug goes almost unnoticed and not one of the sour grape stompers here has any comment at all.

Looks like some sorry FortyWhiner put a cheap hit on Jeremy.  This is what happens when a MEDIOCRE whiner is watching from the sidelines instead of playing between them.  Gotta be a fine for that, right Goodell? Don't worry, payback, much like that whiner, is a b1tch.

Hey, I think it WAS Mike Tomlin! Guess he wanted some action because they didn't make the playoffs.

It's also pretty clear holding after he finally fights his way back onto the field of play. Fines all around!

everyone on the sidelines are supposed to be behind that yellow line so yeah it should have been a flag

I have watched it mutiple times now, I don't see where you are seeing the "bump back"

There is a reason the 49ers are thought to be the dirtiest team in the NFL.  Should have been a flag for that and a flag for holding on #26 also.

Yeah, the way his head snapped back right before he goes behind the guy.....and a guy doesn't just fall like that

I have no idea who the man is, but it appears as if he made a deliberate effort to impede the return to the field.  If he's a 49er's person in some "official capacity" then there should be some action taken.  He doesn't appear to be a ball boy or part of the crew working the chains.

@studio.alessandro  Def not a "trip", clotheslined him..... should have been fined but the 9ers had some tough calls that sent them home. No shocker... GoHawks

@studio.alessandro OMG, you have no idea what you are talking about.  Do you know what a forearm shiver is in football ?  Lower the shoulder, impact with the forearm, and finish by bringing your forearm up for max impact.  That's exactly what this punk did, it's obvious.  You likely aren't seeing the flow of the play watching a frame at a time.  Just watch it slowed down a little.  The guy clearly steps up and puts is shoulder and forearm into Lane, who was in front of him.  The guy actually had to step forward to hit him.  Guarantee it will be a fine for the 49ers and likely a suspension for him, if he even makes the team next year.

@studio.alessandro You must be blind. I saw a deliberate hit after watching several replays... plus notice the look of the guy who did it.... a leering look if I ever saw one.

Hope they fine the guy.

@studio.alessandroWRONG! The 49er inactive player obviously steps into Lane. You can tell...watch as the man gets his right arm/shoulder ready to take a hit and as Lane comes to him he meets Lane's body with his shoulder...should be a fine...no flag...just a fine and maybe a suspension...

@Craig Notice they never want to face a player head on, always grabbing like a little girl.
