Jerry Jones reportedly prepared to clean house if Cowboys miss the playoffs

Jerry Jones has supported Jason Garrett throughout the season, but if the Cowboys miss the playoffs again this year, many expect Garrett will be gone next season. (Gus Ruelas/AP)

Jerry Jones reiterated his support of head coach Jason Garrett last week, in the wake of the Cowboys’ horrendous collapse against the Green Bay Packers. Dallas’ owner also has publicly backed oft-criticized defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.

However, Jones may privately be planning to wipe the slate clean if the Cowboys cannot rally in Weeks 16 and 17 to claim the NFC East.

ESPN’s Ed Werder tweeted Sunday: “Source says current expectation is Jerry Jones will fire HC Jason Garrett and coaching staff unless the Cowboys win NFC East, make playoffs.”

In reality, that revelation comes as little surprise — Garrett has been considered “on the hot seat” since at least last season. The Cowboys have finished 8-8 in each of Garrett’s first two full years at the helm, losing a Week 17 game to cough up the division both times. They host Philadelphia in the upcoming Week 17, and if the Cowboys can beat Washington Sunday, that will be another winner-take-all affair.

“By the way, Garrett will coach that game against the Redskins, so book that and write about that,” Jones told reporters after his team’s 37-36 loss last Sunday, according to The Dallas Morning News. “He’ll coach that ballgame we’ve got coming up and as far as I can see in the future be coaching games for the Cowboys.”

Jones also said that he did not need to answer questions about Garrett’s future because, “I slammed that door back here, when was it, four weeks ago. That door was slammed. I don’t need another chance. And y’all shouldn’t ask for one every time you see me under any circumstances, whether we’ve had a bad practice or whether we’ve had, as we had today, a real disappointment.”

Earlier in December, Jones offered a similar vote of confidence to his defensive coaches: “To fix what we’re doing, there’s nobody I’d rather have than [Kiffin] and [defensive line coach] Rod Marinelli.” The Cowboys currently rank dead last in passing yards allowed and total yards allowed.

Garrett’s current contract runs through the 2014 season. He received that deal prior to the 2011 campaign, after Jones removed the interim tag Garrett had inherited in taking over for a fired Wade Phillips during a 6-10 2010.

Aye Burke, are  you prepared to issue a retraction of this "Jerry Reportedly ..." crap of an article, Cowboys didn't make the playoffs and Jerry hasn't cleaned house. Time to take responsibility when you claim something and if doesn't happen. Otherwise your cred is eroded.

Yeah! Lets keep firing the coaching staff. Thats the reason.... Its the coaching staff. It couldnt be the players. Or chock artest romo. No. Lets fire the coachs. So we can again lose on the big stage again. Funny how romo got out of this hot seat by a "so called injury that didnt need surgery right away". They have plenty of tempary solutions to keep him going through the playoffs. I think someones scareddddd.

Dallas will not win, Jerry Jones will fire the entire coaching staff, and next year they will be even more mediocre. Things will change in Dallas when fans quit buying tickets. As long as jerry makes money, he doesn't really care.

Jones should fire himself and Kiffin and Garrett. Then pay Jimmie Johnson a billion dollars and bring him back to pick this mediocre team up and make them contenders again. Jerry's big ego should be shattewred by now after losing season after losing season. Jerry Jones worst owner in the league, without a doubt! Oh by the way the Eagles will destroy the boys , badly destroy!!!

Dumping Garrett-Top is a no-brainer, along with geriatric pants-pooping Monte K,

but Jerry Jones would be well advised to also give the hook to the Cowboys' hideous looking "gm" as well.

Here in New England we have had 13 years of peace and productivity.

The main reasons ... Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and an owner in Robert Kraft who learned his lesson early (remember Tebucky Jones?) that owners own ... coaches coach and players play.

Keep going Jerry! We love you!

Regrettably, the GM has the full backing of the owner.

Garrett is Jerry Jones' "yes man". He isn't going anywhere. You guys didn't know that JJ coaches from the Luxury Suite!

Two decades of mediocrity with one constant ... Jerry Jones interfering with his coaching staff on a daily basis.  But, hey, don't fix it if it ain't broke.

Cleaning house? Great! Who's going to be the new GM?

Jerry, maybe you should start by firing the GM. He's the guy who works with the HC and owner and is the primo talent evaluator of every NFL team. OH,……That's RIGHT! YOU are the GM, Jerry. My bad. Well no wonder your team hasn't won crap since you became the GM and will never win a blessed thing while you maintain the post. You're arrogance knows no bounds, Jerry and as a talent evaluator, you suck. Figure it out, YOU'RE the problem, NOT the solution. But know this; every fan, of every other team in the NFL is reveling in the Cowboys continued slide!

Last week should have been a HUGE WAKE UP CALL for Jerry Jones when the crowd for the Packers was LOUDER than the Cowboys playing at Jerry World...

The simple fact is that since Jimmy Johnson's (firing) departure, the Cowboys have been nothing more than mediocre at best.

I feel sorry for all of the team's alums from the 70's, 80's and 90's having to see this happen during their lifetime.  I'm sure that both Tex Schramm and Tom Laundry have rolled over in their graves to many times to count.

Jerry needs to check his ego and money at the door and hire a GM..

I live in the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex; however, I could care less about the Cowboys success, but it doesn't take a college graduate to see what the real issue is...

He should start with the GM.

As an 40+ yr. Eagles fan I'll tell you the difference between Philly fans and other towns: Philly fans LOVE their teams BUT, they are highly critical. When their teams STINK, Philly fans say, "WE  STINK!!"  Not only are they not delusional about their sports teams, they don't even kid themselves about them, which is a much lesser form of self-delusion. Most other towns, and not just small towns either because NY is prime among them, are the OPPOSITE.

BUT jerry jones TAKES THE CAKE. He is THE most self-deluded cowboys fan on the planet. And that's saying something.

I remember the  SB cowboys teams of the 70's and 90's and when the Eagles had no shot vs. the boys. I remember a few years ago when the cowboys had the better team.

But you truly have to be self-delsuional to think the cowboys have a shot at beating the Eagles next week. You're reaching to believe the game will be even close.

You'r eloping at 2 different teams at 2 different levels heading in 2 different directions. Sticking your head up your butt and dreaming isn't going to change that. Just deal with it and pressure jones to step down. My brothers and friends hope you're never successful and jones lives to a 100.

The stadium is bad a$$, I will give him that. However, Mr. Jones admitted that if he was his hero Mr. Steinbrenner, he would have fired himself years ago...

He will be GM for a few more years easy.... the misery continues....

It's not a question of who is the coach.  The question is who is calling the offensive plays, because it was Garrett early on & then Callahan and then reports that both were 'collectively' calling plays.  In any case, Jones, among other things, has been evasive about this since mid season.  What we know is that when things are not right down there in Valley Ranch, changes happen.

So much for Garrets Job being safe, what a freakin joke. The cowboys aren't able to have a decent record even in the worst division in football.

Delusional to the end. What's worse: Plastic-face Jones or the fans that continue to throw money away on a mediocre team?

G_que70

Jerry has hired and fired coaches for years and has come up with the same results.  The one constant is that he's still the GM! Nothing will ever change as long as he is at the helm so when he does ax Garrett he will just go out and get another yes man who's just happy to have a head coaching job.  The coach won't have the ability to hire his own staff (that's Jerry's job) and will be castrated from the time he's hired.

If Jerry Jones were to have a stroke and not be able to speak or write any directives.. he could probably sit in his suite and watch his team actually win a Super Bowl.

Good news for Cowboys fans then, if he really is going to clean house.  A NEW GM!!!  His best move ever.  (Okay, I know that's not going to happen . . . and they will be a joke as long as he's involved like he is.)

MarkMcClure

Here is an idea. Offer Bill Belichick $20 million a year and 10% of the franchise and PRAY TO GOD HE TAKES IT...than get out of his way while he takes you to Super Bowls

But he won't fire himself, so none of the clean-out will actually matter.

I hope for Jason Garrett's sake Jones does clean house. I think JG has proven that he is a capable NFL head coach considering who's team he has been coaching. If he were to coach an organization that actually has some leadership in the management instead of an egomaniac, he might be able to wins some playoff games.

Jones is the problem in Dallas, much like William Clay Ford has been the problem in Detroit. WCF hired idiots for years. Jones hires himself as the idiot to run the team. Not really much difference.

It's almost incomprehensible that anyone would buy into Werder's "scoop". Not because Garrett couldn't be fired but who the hell would 1) Have privvy to that information, 2) Leak it for no possible gain, and 3) Risk his future in the NFL by doing such an assanine thing?

Just saw a Jerry Jones Interview and now he is saying the Jason is his coach.....this guy flip flaps all over the place..........

so he's going to fire himself too?

The team would be better if Jerry cleaned houses for a living rather than acted as GM.

Even if the Cowboys make the playoffs, they are not a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

Whatever
Whatever

OK Jerry. Whatever you say. But Jason Garrett isn't drafting your defensive players, he isn't failing to cover wide receivers or tackle running backs, and he isn't playing special teams. As I recall, he was hired because he is an offensive genius, and the Cowboys are a pretty good offensive team.

So keep playing fantasy owner for real and keep being the GM, because the rest of the NFL loves the fact that they can always count on the Cowboys to vomit on their shoes in December.

If it means Jerry Jones will retire and hire an actual general manager, then I hope they do miss them.

BuzzFrankacott

Does that mean he is going to fire the bum who is the current general manager, the guy has a shocking  track record of busted draft pick and horrible salaries being given out?

RobertReid

I too am a lifelong fan of the Pokes, and you're right. This is what happens when you have non-football people running a professional football organization. His record as a GM for 17 seasons has been .500 with one playoff victory. Most owners would have changed course by now, but. Jerry has been very clear that he will never step down as GM, and his son will assume those duties when Jerry retires.

@WilliamWheeler - I'm a life long Cowboy fan but as much as it pains me to say it.....you speak the truth. Jerry Jones has made the franchise value climb but the team performance drop since the exit of Jimmy Johnson. Unfortunately for all Cowboy fans, he will never sell so we are stuck with him "til death do we part", and then there are his sons......

@Thomas15 Sorry, Philly. Born, raised in Pittsburgh. Seen it all. Great teams and lousy teams in every one of our sports. When our teams suck like the Pirates did for 20 straight years, everybody said they suck. same with the Penguins and Steelers during the lean years. I honestly do not think most towns fans are delusional. Most knowledgeable fans realize and understand when their teams suck. I just don't think most town's fans do it with as much venom as Philly fans do.

@Thomas15 as a lifelong fan (born in texas) i am saddened to agree with you.  checkmate, for the third year in a row.  jim jones continues to distribute kool-aid and is a poison to the cowboys....

@MarkMcClure  Kills me when people think Belichick is is the Messiah.  He hasn't won it all since he had Harrison, Vrabel, Seymour, Bruschi and others - same as when he had LT, Banks, Burt, Marshall, Carson as D coordinator...  Hasn't led them to a SB win, with arguably the best QB in the NFL, in NINE years. Give him dominant guys on D and he'll win.

Jerkzilla

@MarkMcClure It is too late for Beli to win Super Bowls in Dallas.  There isn't much of the talent Parcells brought in left and he can't tape his SB opponent's walk through anymore.

What rock have you been under? Jones has maintained since the end of last season that Garrett's job was nopt in jeopardy; he did so again earlier in the season, and a third time--emphatically--a few weeks ago.
