Is there anything New York Jets rookie defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson can’t do? He’s one of the league’s best and most disruptive defenders whether he’s playing tackle or end, and as we detailed earlier this week, he’s just as good as he says he is.

However, what we did not know is that Richardson, selected with the 13th overall pick in the draft, has talent as a goal-line rusher. With 3:23 left in the third quarter of the Jets’ game against the Carolina Panthers, the Jets gave the ball to the big fella, and Richardson rumbled in for the one-yard touchdown. This was even more impressive in that Richardson had gained one yard on the previous play as a ballcarrier, so you’d assume the Panthers knew what was coming.

Richardson also advanced his Defensive Rookie of the Year candidacy earlier when he chased Cam Newton down on a scramble.

The question is, where did this idea come from? In two years at Missouri, Richardson had never carried the ball, and he had no carries at the NFL level. He was a tight end in high school at St. Louis’ Gateway Tech (Mo.), so maybe there will be some Warren Sapp-style touchdown receptions in Richardson’s future.

He’s doing everything else asked of him, so why not?

Either Rex can provide more creative leadership or he is gone. This season is looking a lot like past seasons.
