Robert Griffin III expecting Washington will have a new coach in 2014

Let’s take another check of the Washington collapse tote board …

Robert Griffin III is out right now but should be back in as the team’s starter next season. Kirk Cousins is in as the current starting QB, but he could be out if the Redskins receive a tantalizing trade offer. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan’s ready to be out, be it by his choosing or the team’s.

And head coach Mike Shanahan … well, that’s still somewhat of a mystery.

Count Griffin among the folks who believe someone else will be running the Washington show in 2014. The NFL Network reported Sunday that Griffin has told teammates “he believes he’ll be playing for a different head coach in 2014.” (Which is different, we can assume, than believing he’ll play for a different team.) Ian Rapoport also reported that Griffin and Shanahan do not even acknowledge each other when they pass each other at the team’s facility.

All signs — including what appears to be a growing rift between himself and Griffin – seem to be pointing toward Shanahan’s departure, at the end of this season if not before. However, ESPN revealed that Shanahan has no plans to resign and would like to return as Washington’s coach in 2014.

The motivation for that may be partially found in Washington’s apparent desire to withhold the final $7 million-plus of Shanahan’s contract, if he’s fired this offseason, on grounds that he breached his contract.

At this point, Washington owner Daniel Snyder may wait until after Week 17 to make any changes, be it either of the Shanahans or within the roster. The only good news for Snyder’s team at this point is that only two games remain in the regular season — and the end cannot come soon enough.

Update: Shanahan walked out of his press conference Sunday after being asked repeatedly to address his job status.

Redskin fans are delusional if they believe Cousins gives them the same chance to compete as RGIII. RGIII was damaged goods coming out of Baylor with his quote Heisman Trophy unquote and exacerbated his vulnerabilities by pressing to play in the playoffs last year and tearing up his knee. Despite that, a healthy RGIII is better than a healthy Cousins, who was rated below Russell Wilson coming out of the BigTen in terms of arm strength and leadership. Cousins is talented and will make a great second or marginal starter somewhere else. But when pressured he makes poor decisions and commits errors - has been a knock on Cousins for awhile.

RGIII is a victim of his hype, his dad and his immaturity. But being in a system like the Redskins that enables this type of behavior, either the coach has to go or the franchise quarterback because they cannot coexist based on the rumor and innuendos. If RGIII has to go, so be it but be careful what you wish for because Cousins may not be the answer you are looking for.

RG3 expected to come in and turn the Skins into RG3 and The Redskins. He's furious that didn't work out.

It is very likely he is playing 'Phantom Menace' and trying to get Shanahan ousted with 'leaks', gossip and lies. It is also very likely that he wanted the Skins to lose from the moment he turned on Shanahan.

The Skins need to dump RG3 and move on. He's nothing but another draft bust. He's a Jerry Jones style player. Let him go to the Cowboys.

Washington was expecting a decent quarterback. How did that one work out?

until RG3 learns his place and that the program is bigger than he is, no one is going to want to coach him.  Shanahan is not 2nd year player - he's been around the block numerous times and doesn't deserved to be second guessed by any one player.

I believe his father is a big reason why Griffin III is acting the way he is. If I was the Redskins organization I would ban him from the team facilities. I think he is a toxic influence on his son, which is surprising considering that Griffin III's father is a Soldier like I am, and sucking it up and doing your job is the way most of us Soldiers think. Not complain and whine until you get your way.

Granted all of our views are from the outside looking in and are based on media reports (which in these times are dubious at best), but am I the only thinking that RGIII is turning out to be an ego-inflated punk with plenty of toxicity who will never live up to his rookie season?

Sadly RGIII is one of those players that was so great in College but can't play up to NFL standards. He will play for several coaches in the next couple of years and then quietly retire to selling cars in Texas.

Keep Cousins. Dump RGIII.  As a Cowboys fan, we have our own share of problems, but I enjoy the rivalry when both teams are playing well. That hasn't ben the case in a while...

RG3 has bust written all over him. His play is atrocious his attitude is just as bad. He shows a complete lack of respect for the coaching staff. He is a Prima Dona cry baby. This is the NFL where you either play well or your gone. To look at both seasons you can't blame coaching on any of this. The system never changed, the players did not change much. Sure some of this might be lingering from last years injury but not enough to blame everything on it especially not attitude or effort. SSnyder is being cautious for once and maybe has seen that so much change has not done the organization well. If anything offer RG3 up for trade bait get what you can be done with the ingrate.

RGIII over-rated.  Speed is key to his game - not his throwing ability.  Good college QB (due to speed and mediocre throwing ability, but not cut out for NFL - too fragile.  Cousins looks good and likely to have a longer and more productive NFL career.  If skins get rid of Cousins they are beyond hope and deserve their fate.

The thinly veiled racism is strong with this one. Comparing RG3 to Vince (voices) Young? Why Vince Young? Why not Jeff George or Ryan Leaf or Todd Maranovich? Here's what's really happening in D.C. Shanahan don't want no coloured boy quarterbacking his team. RG3 has an injury that requires a minimum of seventeen months healing and rehab time - minimum. He simply should not be playing - end of story.

The Shanahan play calling is just a year removed from giving RGIII the Rookie of the Year Award and he's already looking to the next coach.  It's all about RGIII and that should be a BIG concern for the Skins!

So, how does Snyder justify eating $35 million for Haynesworth but not $7M for Shanny?  And how would Rapaport know what goes on at Ashburn if he's not in the hallways?

So the NFL Network reported second-hand information and now it's a fact?  Really, really shoddy reporting.  BTW, I hope Shannahan is named Coach for Life in DC so that he helps keep the Skins in the base forever.

Never fails...the media, in their constant pursuit of political correctness, expends an article discussing the viewpoint of a benched mediocre QB with a losing record.  Never mind whether HE is part of the problem, of course.

RG3 has bust written all over him, so an attitude adjustment may be in order.  His "difficult" coach is a two-time Super Bowl winner (actually three-time, if you count his work with Steve Young and the 49ers as OC), so given that he has the respect of Young & Elway, both far superior to Griffin in almost every respect, I'd say the pup needs to look at himself in the mirror--hard--this off-season.

If he couldn't get along and learn from Shanahan, who then?  And why would any coach with leverage want to work with this diva, of the ultimate diva, lil'Danny?

The worst job in the NFL (and I'm including Jacksonville in that estimation).

The result of the decision to play RGIII when he was already injured. Shanahan's desperation cost the QB a more extensive injury, a longer rehab, loss of confidence in the coach, regression in RGIII's development and Shanahan his future in WA.

WOW! Another player who thinks he's bigger than the game and the grand picture! Be a team player! It s a team sport with a head coach. DO YOUR JOB! Then go home!

@MarkCalasade

RG3 is nothing without his legs.  RG3 wasn't the reason why Baylor was good as Baylor was good this year without him.  RG3 was overrated from the beginning.

@Jeph

RG3 was great in college, but as this year proves, Baylor is still good without him.  Maybe it was the coach that was there.....think about it

@ShawnKey Has it occurred to you that an available RG3 might be enticing to Jerry Jones?? Only obstacle would be in Romo's 55 Million contract.

Michael50

@ShawnKey As a Cowboys fan, I bet you hope we keep Cousins. That would be the stupidest move a franchise could make. It would be like keeping Romo when you know he is not good enough to take you to the next level. Why would any team do that... oh wait.

@Centennial The comparing of Young and RG3 is much more the style of QB they are then racial. Of all the QB's you listed they are all pocket or passers non of them really are scrambling types. If you had used Wilson or Tebow or something your argument would make sense. RG3 other major issue is his willingness to throw his teammates under the bus or anyone else for that matter he does not personify team player. When you bring up race all it becomes is an excuse in the NFL you either do your job well or your gone.

you are the poster child for "racist". It seeps out your pores, drips down your fingers and dribbles all over your keyboard. You are a racist, and you will look for anything to stand atop your pretentious dais and spew hate towards anyone and anything with ears. You are an embarrassment.

@Centennial Wasn't HE the one pumping his chest and taping Rehab videos and starred in an Ad campaign "All in the Week 1" or was that Shanny??  Wasn't HE the one pissed off when Shanny wouldn't let him play in the preseason???  Get over the racism excuse brother, the kid is selfish, and the definition of a "ME" guy.  Go to a game, watch him look for the cameras and then go pose for them.  Dude is FAKE

RG3 made the decision to get on the field himself.  Nobody held a gun to RG3's head.  RG3 wanted to play hero......

@CCglo

Why don't you get over your racism first... why did you have to refer to him as "brother"  ...lol do you know him or is that how you normally speak? i doubt it... listen all those code words you used are what typical whites used when referring to black guys .... ie "ME"  guy  selfish , not to mention character issues... like those never apply to white players, but its always ignored by people like yourself...

to be honest ... you wanted rg3 to be a good little boy and keep his mouth shut... you didnt like seeing him put himself out there , when thats his right to earn money when and where he can... So people like yourself couldnt wait to see Kirk playing because he was the right shade if Kirk was black i bet this QB thing wouldnt be an issue coming off the year RG3 had when he won rookie of the year... put this in prespective.. he had one of the greatest year EVER in history ... and people want to put Kirk ahead of him, if color is not an issue there tell ,me what it is ?
