Update (Monday, 10:00 a.m. ET): According to multiple reports, an MRI revealed that Gronkowski suffered a torn ACL and MCL in the Patriots’ win over the Browns. His season is over.

Update (5:00 p.m. ET): Gronkowski suffered “what’s believed to be a torn ACL,” FOX’s Mike Garafolo reported after the Patriots’ win over Cleveland.

The Patriots may again have to make do without tight end Rob Gronkowski after he took a vicious helmet-on-knee hit during Sunday’s game with the Browns. Gronkowski stayed down for several minutes after the collision with Cleveland safety T.J. Ward, then hobbled onto a cart.

The injury occurred on a 21-yard pass from Tom Brady to Gronkowski. As Gronkowski caught a pass over his shoulder, Ward came flying in low. Gronkowski’s leg did not appear to be planted when Ward made contact, but it looked as if it may have hyperextended anyway. Gronkowski’s leg also whipped around violently before he hit the turf — he dropped the football but was down by contact.

Sunday marked just Gronkowski’s seventh game of the season. He sat out the Patriots’ first six outings while dealing with back and forearm issues. The forearm cost him five games at the end of 2012, too.

Watching the pats this year has been like watching the WWF. I keep expecting Hulk Hogan to make a special appearance. I am convinced that the refs are told to help Tom Brady out as much as possible for he is the "darling" of the NFL. So many game changing calls have help the Pats this year. I am convinced that the NFL is trying to create history via the officials. I am tired of it. The integrity of the game is at stake. Something smells very fishy!! No pun intended.. Go Phins!!!

I can't wait to see the NFL become a flag football league.

When that happens the NFL will no longer be about size; it will be about speed.

Some people just get hurt no matter what they do; that is life. Gronk is one of these people.

Sunday was the day football died for me.  As far as I'm concerned, the NFL has a crisis on its hands.  You can't have star players like the Gronk being hit at the knee like that, putting his season and career in jeopardy.  TJ Ward knew exactly what he was doing when he went for the knee. He should be out and suspended as long as the Gronk was out.  That was a cheap shot.  There's no place for it in the NFL.  If the NFL doesn't do anything about this and just shrugs its shoulders, then I don't know if I can ever take this sport seriously again.

Great hit, one of the best of the season. My advice to Gronk and patriots fans? Toughen up.

If you watch the film. it appears that Ward made initial contact with Gronk's thigh but slid down to his knee area. The NFL has to take physics into account with its rules. The initial point of contact may result in eventual contact lower or higher depending upon the reaction of the player who is hit.

The refs couldn't fix this?

I think football can do without all this "spearing with the helmet". used to be you had to tackle your opponent, not see if you can injure him by spearing. Lets get it out of football by much bigger penalties--game ejections and suspensions. Not doing enough to discourage this dirty behavior.

Faced an uphill battle WITH him the last 12 games.  At least he didn't blow his elbow.

Anything bad that happens to any player on any team that massachusetts roots for is cause for celebration. It's hard to know which is worse: the widespread insufferable arrogance of new england liberal elites; that they are more like a communist state than an American one; that they inflicted the kennedy's on the Country and continue to coddle them as we see in the recent release of michael skakel(kennedy) one of the many kennedy rapist/muderers; or the fraud cheater bellichek and brady taking credit for so many big games in playoffs and SB's that were REALLY won by ERNIE ADAMS and his true polymath genius that has allowed and STILL allows the patriots to cheat using their surveillance and ADAMS-to-brady on the 2nd frequency pasty the NFL's 15 second limit. If terrorists attack this Nation again, I want it to be against new england and/or california especially during the oscars ceremony. Kill 'em all, God will worth them out. I hope they get brady next game.

Pretty pitiful to see the haters on here having a laugh over Gronk's nasty injury. Makes you really feel good about people.

How about they teach these little DBs how to tackle?  A tackle is not launching oneself at the knees of your opponent, nor at their chests or head.  A tackle involves wrapping the player up and taking them down.  I played 5 years at 5 foot 6 inches, and I got run over, but I wrapped the guy up and took em down without anyone getting hurt.

Everyone goes for the kill shot now, which I find reprehensible and unnecessary.  Learn how to tackle and you can stop anyone.

@DeanHartman RIGHT…like the non call at the end of the Pats/Panthers game when the Pats lost. You have that conspiracy all figured out.

@Taters You can't penalize a player for a hit that was perfectly LEGAL!! They didn't even throw a flag. You can read the rules on the NFL website.

@UBERTAXTHERICH being happy that a team lost is one thing. being happy that someone (on the wrong team?)  got injured is a whole other ball of wax.

well done.

@Thomas15 Wow. Somebody really CAN make any subject into a political soapbox! You are an idiot terrorist, plain and simple for wishing that sort of thing on people. DB, in your case, does not = defensive back

@Thomas15  what concerns me is that this is not comedy, you actually believe in the stuff. so much hatred you are celebrating a person's injury because he belongs to the "other side" as you have been told and obediently observe.

you are a psychopath and clearly just upset that your sports teams aren't as good as New England's. sucks to suck bud, quit your bitching.

@Thomas15 I'm in sympathy for nothing you say or stand for. You are a walking POS that is filled with hate. You serve no useful purpose on this planet. But keep ranting like that, it will hasten the demise of the conservatives faster than they are already doing themselves.

@dassa0069 Yeah, he went low to make sure he didn't miss the tackle. Textbook football right there. Perfectly legal, which is why the league won't be taking any action and no flags were thrown.

Joebuckster

@TomPost Maybe they should teach players to TAKE a tackle. You see the hit coming, you adjust how/where it hits you and how you fall. If you don't react to it, you take what you get. There is a reason some players are injury prone and some aren't...

NebojsaTodorovic
NebojsaTodorovic

Unfortunately for some players, the end justifies the means.  Gronk is too big to take down with a waist wrap up tackle so guys will go for his knees.

Voiceover310

@TomPost You played 5 years in the NFL tackling people at 5'6?? This ain't some backyard pickup game dude. Gronk is a tank, it has taken multiple players to tackle that rhino on numerous occasions. Even college ball is nowhere near physical as the NFL is. You have never tried to tackle anyone like Gronkowski. The hit was perfectly legal, what do you think a coach would tell a player if he thought the player in question was going to have trouble bringing a guy down??? "GO LOW" is what they will say. Just cause Gronk can't make it through a season, doesn't mean the NFL needs to change the rules.

@TomPost Perfectly legal hit, makes the highlight reel. I stood up and cheered.

NON CALLS HAPPEN ON EVERY PLAY. That is much different than a game changing call where no infraction occurs. Whats even more curious is all of those types of calls at the end of Pats games that completely change the outcome of games. The Patriots constantly get help from officials; more than any other team. And yes I think I have it figured out. Brady cries and the officials comply.

Typical left-wing "open-mindedness."  Nothing about your philosophy works in the real world, so you have to smear the other side as viciously and loudly as possible-- because you sure as heck don't have facts or history on your side.
