Ahmad Brooks on Robert Griffin III: ‘I don’t feel he should be playing right now’

Other than being healthy enough to start all 11 games thus far, Robert Griffin III has struggled through a highly disappointing sophomore season in the NFL. He and his Washington team suffered another frustrating hit on Monday night, in a 27-6 loss to the 49ers that dropped Washington to 3-8 on the season.

Griffin threw for a season-low 127 yards in the game, behind an offensive line that often hung him out to dry against San Francisco’s pass rush. He also rushed for just 22 yards, the sixth time in 2013 he’s finished a game below the quarter-century mark.

And at least one San Francisco player argued after that effort that Griffin should not even be on the field.

“He’s obviously a man and he makes his own decisions, but I personally don’t feel he should be playing right now,” linebacker Ahmad Brooks said, according to CSNWashington. “I don’t think he should be playing. You can see it. Everybody can see it, everybody can see it.”

Griffin and the Washington coaching staff have struggled to get on the same page this season. RGIII said after last week’s loss to the Eagles — another in which the offense could not progress out of neutral — that Philadelphia’s D “knew what was coming,” a comment many took as a thinly veiled shot at coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

Mike Silver reported on the NFL Network Sunday that “there is a lot of air to be cleared” between Griffin and the Shanahans (Kyle and head coach Mike). “This is real,” Silver said. “RGIII has expressed to teammates his dissatisfaction with Mike Shanahan and this could be coming to a head.”

Amid all this, the cries from Washington’s fan base for a QB change have been ever increasing. Backup Kirk Cousins, he of the clutch late-season relief win in 2012, has thrown just nine passes this season. But be it to push Griffin or to raise Cousins’ trade value, many Redskins fans have clamored for the Michigan State product to assume the reins.

“We look at everybody,” Mike Shanahan said Monday night when asked if the Redskins staff would re-evaluate the QB situation. “Everybody wants to talk about the quarterback, and we understand the quarterback position is dependent on a lot of different positions on the team. There’s always going to be growing pains … nothing’s automatic in the National Football League with the quarterback.”

Washington now finds itself a full three games back of the NFC East lead and fading fast. Making matters worse, because of the trade to move up for Griffin last year, the Redskins are without a first-round pick in 2014.

So, there may not be any easy answers forthcoming for Shanahan or Griffin. Benching Griffin would threaten to derail any progress he might make from here through Week 17. But as Brooks was quick to point out, Washington is not progressing much right now with RGIII at the helm.

The Redskins are not deep enough at some key positions due to the back to back years of salary cap penalties.........Monday night it was obvious that Jordan Reed and Hankerson not being present took their toll.

RG3 is experiencing his growing pains.....it would be useless to bench him as playing time is part of the learning process.

The REDSKINS are projected currently to have as much as $ 49+ Million in cap space this upcoming offseason.......missing a 1st round draft pick is not going to hurt them too much.

Why are coaches so afraid to sit a starting QB when he is sucking up the joint? RGIII passer rating must be one of the lowest of all starters. Forget his knee, he's ineffectual. But then again you have the Shanahan brigade coaching that team. You watch the play calling and it's pathetic. You won't fix the team by starting Cousins, but who cares? Your 3-8, try something different. RGIII looks lost out there.

Soooooo......   It's the coaches fault that he is not doing well on the field?

Got it......

Said in Sept.- this year -  that Cousins should start at least the 1st  four games ...RG looked  ok but his mobility was never 100 % - the knee brace didn't help any ...Cousins played great last year  and is probably better than  at least 16 starting QB in the NFL  now ...Cousins is the real deal ...

Take RG3 out and see what Cousins can do.

1. Let's RG3 heal up.

2. Let's everyone see if Cousins is for real and possibly opens door for RG3/Cousins to be traded.

They have little chance of making the playoffs and even if they won out and somehow made it in a weak division, they wouldn't get anyway.

All these problems point directly to the coach. He's lost the team, and I don't think he EVER had the quarterback. Griffin obviously has no respect for Shanahan. Oh, and both coordinators are lacking as well. That they won the division last year just shows how pathetic the division was/is.

it's OVA.  Buy a Redskins hoodie, keep it in the plastic so it will be worth something one day.  Then flip to the Discovery Channel.  This team consistently looks like they don't want to play.

Redskins are in trouble.  Pretty sad when the whole organization has to put their hopes on an injured player.

Redskins still have 2 more years to figure out what to do with RG3/Cousins.  They could probably get a #1 for Cousins this off season and help the offensive line.  Of course then they could have a decade of embarrassment, when Cousins is a success elsewhere and RG3 washes out w/ that bum knee.

Pulling the lame horse RGme and replacing him with Cousins isn't going to fix that trainwreck.

Well, the way I see it everytime he passed there were two or three unblocked guys coming at him. They do not have the line for a vertical pass game. This is a coaching problem not a player problem. They need to go to a short quick route game.

When you win you say whatever you want and no one criticizes you.  When you lose no matter what you say it is wrong,.

These read option qb's are simply a fad. NFL defenses are too big, too strong and too fast. As we've all seen, all it takes is one big hit and the read option guys are pretty much done. When Vick had his legs he was an amazing athlete and no-one could catch him. Eventually the defenses caught up to him and now it's injury after injury. RG3 is a shell of his former self once his knee was blown out. He will never be the RG3 prior to the injury. RG3's prima dona routine these days is because the media basically put him in the HOF before he even threw and NFL pass. This past off-season he was crowned a King by the media and it really pissed off most of the guys in the NFL. He will have to grow up and learn to be a pocket passer that can once in awhile scramble.

I don't blame RGIII for his inattentiveness but he's a very well paid employee who should carry himself with more professional decorum. That being said, I'll never regret the trade for him. I've seen like 50 new QB's in just 13 years of being a die hard fan. Kyle Shanahan needs to be fired but his paps doesn't have the gull to do it so he'll go down with the ship. If I were playing under him with NFL skill/knowledge I'd be annoyed too. One example says it all from last night:

- RGIII waiting for the call with 41 seconds left in the half after a tackle out of bounds.

- Call makes it in with 16 seconds or so on the playclock, get to the line, timeout called - too little time to set/hut.

- After the TO, playcall is two deep ins, one slant underneath, incompletion.

That's your BIG play after 4 solid minutes to think about it?!?! This happens constantly and the opposition knows it! He's outsmarted on a consistent basis with know other production to be seen. He had a dimension others didn't have last year - RGIII's legs - and used that extra 'pawn' to build an offense. He had Kubiak in Houston (offensive coach, hands deep into the offensive playcalling) doing a lot of work. Shanahan taught Kubiak so you'd think he could offer the same, maybe that dynamic is lost father-to-son. Or maybe Kubiak was Zone Blocking king and Shanny got lucky with RBs in the late 90s, early 2000s. Either way, we need a coaching change. I just hope they dont keep it in the family this time around...

If all of this is going on in the Redskins' locker, then it's no wonder they are in the cellar!  Nobody appears to want to play for anybody, when they should be playing for their paychecks!  Try this crap in the real world and see how fast you are booted out the door!  There appears to be a lot more going on here than just any division about RGIII.

This is really a rerun of Mike Vick's career -- just an abbreviated version...

@Jerkzilla -

Dude - Matt Flynn and Kevin Kolb have made a ton of money in the NFL from one or two games.

@Jerkzilla What?! A 1st rd pick for a QB that's started 1 game, thrown for 48yd/0 TD's/2 INT's this yr. Overall 4TD's/5 INT's/514 yd's. Idk what you're smoking, but it definitely causes hallucinations. Has the Matt Flynn experiment taught us nothing?

@Skins'Fan He can't call complicated plays because RG III is not smart enough to run them.  He has to simplify things down to one or two reads for him.  Problem is, the defense can also make those one or two reads.

@rickdixon Vince Young? Harsh! I'm not seeing a lack of intelligence in RGIII. He is trying too hard, but can you really fault him for that? Some thing has happened to the offensive line. For a few games they were pass and run blocking well. If it is that the line man have stopped playing for RGIII, that is really sad, and he has no hope.
