Jonathan Martin reportedly walks out on Dolphins, seeks counseling

The Miami Dolphins listed starting tackle Jonathan Martin as doubtful for Thursday’s game with an “illness”. That update may be an oversimplification of a rather serious matter.

Jay Glazer reported on “Fox Football Daily” Wednesday that Martin has “gone AWOL” following an incident in the team cafeteria earlier this week. According to Glazer, Martin “flipped out” when teammates pulled a prank on him, then “took off, and they haven’t seen him since.”

Martin is now “seeking mental counseling,” the NFL Network’s Jeff Darlington reported. The 23-year-old Martin has not missed a game since Miami selected him in Round 2 of the 2012 draft, but there appears to be almost no chance that he suits up in Week 9 against the Bengals, especially with the team playing on a shortened schedule.

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin would not comment on Martin when asked about the lineman’s absence this week. If Martin does indeed sit out Thursday night, Tyson Clabo likely would rejoin the starting lineup.

However, that’s a secondary concern to the well-being of Martin — an unidentified Dolphins player told Darlington that Martin had an “emotional breakdown”.

No timetable has been provided by the Dolphins for Martin’s return, though the team may now choose to address the situation a little more openly. With a Thursday night game followed by a Monday nighter in Week 10, the Dolphins do have some extra time upcoming between when they take the field. Whether or not Martin can rejoin his teammates by then — or at any point again this season — is unknown.

Bullying is just a pc word for the pressure men put on one another. Some of it is bad and some of it is good. Its impossible for us to know what the circumstances are here so comments are meaningless. Bullying takes place all the time and its not just directed at the poor gay guy like the media wants you to think. Teams and the military have to rely on one another. therefore there is pressure to be better or to be a part of the team or get out. Its not all bad, some of it is ,,,,, but you cannot tell from the hype around this.

Yeah america is no longer the home of John Wayne but home of the pussification.  People need to nut up.  "Bullying" has been around since man was living in caves.  It is only getting worse because you are shining a spot light on it.  Sorry but society has a hierarchy bullying either makes you curl up in the fetal position and accept your role or it makes to try harder to become better.

Disgusting how they called it a 'prank' to make it sound all fun and wholesome. Everyone involved shoul be fired. Pathetic coaching by the Miami Dolphins ....I will never give any support to that franchise ever again.

OMG man up!!!! If you can't handle a prank where people get up and walk away from you, you have no business on the offensive line.

Stop making fun of a guy who refused to put up with continuous hazing - reports are this went on all his rookie year as well - and is man enough to want to fix himself and get help, unlike so many NFL players committing crimes or screwing around or shooting people.

At least he is seeking help unlike the pricks who beat women or do drugs.   But I think the prank was they told him he was traded to the Jags

I hope Peter King doesn't see this article... he'll blame conclusions for sure....

Let's hope the young man gets the counseling he needs and that his teammates learn from this.

What was the 'prank'?  You never know what might set a guy off.  What most think is funny may not be seen as such by everyone.

@JackieRae You should be ashamed of yourself.  It's far more than that if you can at all read.  They're a professional football team for goodness sakes - all for one and one for all or otherwise they have no chance.  Gee, I wonder why they went on a 4 game losing streak.  This a total lack of leadership in the Dolphins organization.  And Jackie, you really are a bad person.

@sam93505 lol   yup, that's King - i sometimes feel he's the writer version of Madden, just goes on and on in a big loop, and at the end of the article he's back to square one, leaving 'up to you' to draw your own conclusions.....lol

@Rickapolis i think it was in the team cafeteria, as he came to sit down with the boyz, they all got up and left him by himself at the table....
