Dez Bryant engages in multiple sideline meltdowns as Cowboys collapse in loss to Lions

Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant made an amazing one-handed touchdown catch in his team’s game against the Detroit Lions, but it appeared that in the second half, communication between Bryant and quarterback Tony Romo broke down.

At one point on the sideline near the end of the third quarter, Bryant came off the field at the end of a Dallas drive and started yelling in a very animated fashion in the general direction of anybody who would listen — coaches, teammates, and eventually Romo, who was sitting on the bench going over the gameplan. (GIF below courtesy of BuzzFeed Sports):

Bryant, who claimed during the week leading up to the game that he was capable of doing everything that Lions receiver Calvin Johnson can do, may have been unhappy at his lack of opportunities. At the end of the third quarter, Bryant had two catches for 22 yards on five targets, while Johnson had ripped the Cowboys secondary to bits with nine catches for 221 yards on 11 targets.

By the way, the Cowboys were leading, 13-10, at the time of his little fracas.

It’s possible that Mr. Bryant had a point. With 6:54 left in the game, Romo threw to Bryant, who rumbled for a 50-yard touchdown that put Dallas up, 27-17 (GIF here also via BuzzFeed). Bryant wasn’t alone either: Jason Witten also reportedly engaged in a slight meltdown on the sideline earlier in the game.

Of course, the Cowboys managed to throw this game away with weird fundamentals, questionable clock management and the inexplicable decision to put a single safety on Johnson, who finished the day with 329 yards, the second-most in league history for a single game. And near the end of Detroit’s 31-30 win, Bryant went off again. This time, he was given a talking-to by Witten and injured teammate DeMarcus Ware. This could be general frustration, or it could be that Bryant’s teammates are simply sick of his antics.

The NFL just release the audio of the conversation between Dez and Romo and he's telling Romo he thinks they're the best in the NFL.  He's very animated while doing it …and so with no audio the Media couldn't wait to portray him as the Angry Black man

We've seen Troy Aikman yelling at team mates ......Aaron Rogers yelling at coaches ....And Tom Brady yelling at coaches and team mates........When whites guys do it ...its painted by the same media .....As "these guys are just big time competitors" .... A black player gets animated and fired up and exhibits the same behavior as those white players do..... and the portrayal suddenly flips and changes to " Oh he's a bad guy, a malcontent or crybaby.....and none of those characteristics were attributed to Aikman, Rogers or Brady when they went off on team mates and coaches.....thats a clear example of a Double Standard when all of them want the same thing ....to simply win.

DeMarcus Ware needs to get out of Dallas and to a team that has a chance of winning a ring... Niners, Ravens, Packers, or Seahawks. The Cowboys organization is too stupid to win any championships.

Why do people insist on saying he's passionate?  Passion should fuse a team, not divide them.  We see the same thing with the Chiefs and D-Bowe not getting the ball NEARLY as much as he should.  HOWEVER, you don't see him calling out the A. Smith for not doing his job.  Instead, he's all about the team and the family feeling with the Chiefs organization.  Sure, he's a great WR, but the whole team should feel embarrassed for that temper tantrum.

I don't think this was a me first rant.  Somebody, anybody, needs to wake this team up.  They were lucky to be up with one minute left and would have been lucky to win that game.  Even still, they should have won that game.  I can' t tell you how many weeks I see a "fist team to have +4 turnovers and lose" type of stat for this team.

Bryant is a cancer on a team that could be pretty good. It is all about him! He won't reach is potential until the leadership puts him in his place cause he sure as heck is not one of the leaders.

I do not like the Cowboys. Be that as it may, I would love to have a player like Dez Bryant on my team who brings his talents AND passion to the game. So what if he feels he is as good as Megatron and wants to bring his A-game?  Every team would kill to have Dez Bryant in their roster. My team (KC Chiefs) are 8-0 and we would love to have DB in our roster. If you want dispassionate role players then watch chess or curling.

I wish Witten would have kicked his @$$. Dez was only mad because he smack talked Johnson and said he was just as good as him.  All Dez proved is that he isn't even worthy to carry his jersey to the washing machine.  What a joke of a "teammate"

What took him so long. Only a matter of time before this behavior flares up off the field. That's what happens when you have a one time crack baby on your team.

One minute left, a hand off up the middle, clock runs down 40 more seconds..oh no..a holding penalty on Dallas, on a play around the end instead..clock stops.....Ok Ok...Still only a minute left, Detroit needs a touchdown going 80 yards.....and you know the rest of the story.......................

Just because he didn't get the stats Calvin did? You see how he does this during a game against Calvin? I like how one anaylst put it "You don't call for the ball in the NFL" this isn't Madden, this isn't Middle School. He was too caught up in being better than the #1 reciever in the league. Too much ego man.

I loved the Demarcus Ware play how he broke up the fight and showed some leadership. During that Jason Witten yellin, was Dez really doing the "Talk to the hand" gesture? LMAO.

But hey, only in Dallas the drama comes

SonoftheMosthigh

First I'm with Dez on this one there was a lot of one on one coverage on him and the ball never came... And it is passion for the game... if the team is loosing and the same damn decisions are being made... I like williams but he made multiple drops and you are not targeting the #1 Wr then he should angry...

And Witten having his issue with the game was yelling himself and then doesn't like what Dez has to say....Please.... And for the record I like what Ware did and stepped in and told Witten to back off and he addressed Dez.... Witten didn't like Dez yelling at his bestfriend and that has no place on the field... Dez is no TO however I hope he has the career that TO had statistically and if so the cowboys could win a title if the qb takes care of the ball and he gets line protection and the cowboys get some better coaching because that loss was a coaching loss some of the decisions strategically were horrible.

I will pay good money to watch Witten or Ware pound Bryant into the ground like a tent stake. Bryant is TO syndrome on steroids- "me, me, me, me, me" all day. Last I knew, each team had to send eleven guys onto the field at a time.

He shouldn't be one of them.

Stop throwing Bryant the ball and tell him that until his behavior improves 180%. If that does not get his attention, sit him down and dump him after the season. Any coach or quarterback that tolerates a WR acting like a child does not have confidence in their ability to coach or play in the NFL.

Bryant is a disgrace to the #88. Retire the jersey again and fire the baby Bryant. He is a disgrace to the whole team

I can't figure out if Dez needs to stop the crack, or if Tony and Jason should stop sharing one anothers   xanax prescription?

I know this is all about Dez, but can we all agree that this team lacks leadership in all senses of the word (accept the D). Yes, our QB looks unbelievable on paper, but paper doesn't show that a huge % of his stats come on the back of unbelievable catches and heads-up football by the players. Every once in a while Tony has a good drive, but he is way out of his league. I know football games are won and lost by a team, but the QB's job is to lead, and he can't do that to save his life. One post-season win in SEVEN YEARS. That's a joke. This guy is one of 5 QB's guaranteed 50+ million. The only difference between him and the other 4 is a ring. I wish I could suck at my job and get paid that much.

A receiver who is a narcissistic head case?  Nooooooooooooo!  It's beginning to look like my complete lack of football talent paid an unexpected dividend: I will never have to meet good ol' Dez.

Dez Bryant is a talented receiver and could be elite if he would just shut the F up. He ran his mouth all week long and when the team came up short he blew a gasket. The cowboys have been doing this same routine for awhile now so I don't understand why he is so shocked that they lost.

I love how everyone comments about all of the changes that need to be made with this team, but they all assume that Dez is just whining about his own stuff. As a lifelong Cowboys fan, I have had enough of the pathetic coaching and play-calling! I, for one, am glad to see that there is one player on the team that is as fed up as I am. I don't really care if he is complaining about his own stuff. HE'S RIGHT! Tony Romo falls in love with one target for several weeks in a row over and over again. Targeting Dez more often would at least be ONE step in the right direction. Could he have handled it better? Yes. But at least he is disgusted by a team and coaching staff that is severely underachieving. And it is NOT the defense (besides the poor decision to single cover Johnson). They are over-achieving when you consider the injuries, but they cannot keep doing that when they can't stay off the field for more than 30 seconds. This team is so poorly coached that a player wastes 5 seconds running a kick out of bounds, because he hasn't been reminded that the clock stops when you get tackled on a kickoff and then Beasley thinks (or worse was told) that they have to run a hook and ladder when they still have 2 timeouts and only need a field goal to win.Go Dez Bryant! Give'em hell until they change something!!!

Please, Please, Jerry Jones, as much as i believe your narcissistic attitude won't allow it, fire someone today! Stop this circus of undisciplined football, stop this nonsense! Time and time again, season after season, the Cowboys assemble the talent to do damage in this league, and go nowhere because their not being led. Dez Bryant, will all world talent, is well on his way to being another Terrell Owens, a loud mouth that will eventually get tuned out. Get a guy like Cowher to come in and tear the house down and build it back up.

@bwilde Seriously? A mountain out of a mole hill if there every was one bwilde.

DeMarcus Ware was also a black man the last time I checked and HE was putting Dez in his place after his SECOND temper tantrum. This is about maturity versus immaturity. Is it constructive or destructive? You have HIS Pro Bowl, future HOF teammates taking Dez to task for his behavior. That should tell you everything you need to know.

ChrisNcNown has it right.

Coop89

Wow, when did it become about race?? If he was telling Romo that they're the best in the NFL then why was he getting into it with Witten and his coaches...pretty sure that would fire up his teammates in a different way that didn't involve them getting in his face. I think it's clear that he was just upset at the play calling and the fact he wasn't getting the ball as much as he wanted .(period) and since you like examples what about Ray Lewis- VERY animated player but he found a way to fire up his teammates without causing tension! It doesn't have anything to do with race and everything to do with his actions.

@Silence Dogood In a perfect world, every player would have energy and passion. Imagine what the sidelines would look like, however, if every player acted like this. No, Mr Dogood, this isn't "energy and passion" -- it's a hissy fit, a temper tantrum, an infantile meltdown.

@vaultcoach120 I see this as poor management all the way around. I thought they had a legit shot of trying a field goal with a couple deep out routes to the sideline or a streak down the middle with a timeout. Jason Garrett: Another example of woeful game management, not to mention the childish stuff on the sidelines. Can you imagine guys like Mike Tomlin or Bill Belichick allowing behavior like that on the sidelines? Hell, Bil Cowher would have personally marched Bryant to the showers. I understand Bryant's frustration, but the behavior comes off as something less than professional.

MartyAdams

The Cowboys will continue to be badly coached so long as Jerry Jones is the principal owner. He hires what he believes will be syncophants. Whey they turn out to be otherwise, he fires them.

cuthbert

@vaultcoach120 No pro player should have to be reminded a simple thing about when a clock does or does not stop. That is day 1 stuff. If a player needs to be reminded of that, they have no business being in the league.

Cowboyfanfromday1
Cowboyfanfromday1

@bigmiket75 Gotta agree, for the most part. Don't think Dez should be the one fired. Coaches need to go. Particularly Garrett & Callahan. None of them seem to learn from past mistakes. Why not put some of the plays in the Cowboy playbook that beat us the previous weeks. Plays calling is too predictable. Especially on run plays to try and use up the clock. Also, need basic defense. Too many of the defense don't know how to tackle, they just try to throw a body block to knock the runner down. Usually giving up many more yards. Tony needs to understand that sometimes the goal is a first down, to keep a drive going, not looking for the score each time. Cowboys did not seem to use the quick slant at all, yesterday. That is the bread and butter for most teams. Cowboys have better receivers, for this play, than most teams....Whitten & Bryant. They have seemed to have abandoned Whitten all together. HE IS AN ALL PRO! Don't know if they are all under achivers or it's all in the coaching. I wish Tony would show some of the passion that Bryant is showing.

@BrianDaley1 @ChrisMcNown That audio and CONVERSATION happened AFTER he threw his little tirade. When your actions disrupt your team they need to be curbed. When he CALMED DOWN then the constructive conversation took place. His outburst before hand? If you listen its him trying to IGNORE reviewing and IMPROVING on the previous play. So ScottBishop is BrianDaley1 your shepherd? Putting blame on people and the media is pretty hypocritical when you just did the same in reverse.
