Danny Amendola knocked out of game vs. Saints

Patriots receiver Danny Amendola suffered a scary head injury Sunday, on a hit by New Orleans safety Rafael Bush. Amendola lowered in his shoulder while running after a catch, possibly in an attempt to get to the first-down marker, and took what may have been a helmet-to-helmet hit from Bush.

Amendola slumped to the turf immediately after the contact, dropping the ball in the process. He had to be helped to his feet, then woozily walked to the Patriots’ locker room, stopping on more than one occasion to turn back toward the field.

Bush was not flagged for a penalty on the play — Amendola was running with the football, so the hit was exempt from the “defenseless receiver” rule — but he could receive punishment from the league.

Amendola has an increasingly dense injury history, including a concussion suffered back in 2009. A groin injury has limited him to just three games this season, and he quickly was ruled out of Sunday’s action following this play. The Patriots’ next game is on Oct. 20, against the Jets in New York.

The NFL is a drug, that society is hooked on. No one wants to get rid of Football, but people die & become permanently destroyed from it. The league is in another dimension of power and will keep professionals away for as long as possible, by answering with "future answers to come" responses. Scumbags who only give about their next buck. Amendola will be lucky to see the field again.

This sucks - good game but TWO SERIOUS HEAD INJURIES. What about Dan Connolly? He went down and was taken out w/a head injury early in the game. Wonder who will be taking care of these guys in 10 years.

Looked like lots of concern from the Saints ... <eyes rolling>

You never really saw Welker take these kind of hits.  Both players have similar body types.  I doubt Danny can or will change his style of play.  Welker just always seemed to feel the hit coming and would get down or out of bounds.

Danny is a great catcher of the football and if the NFL were two hand touch he would be going to the hall of fame. BUT the NFL is not two hand touch and Danny's body can not take the punishment. EVERYONE knew this but we got rid of welker anyway. Just DUMB!! I hope Danny is ok..

Grab and drag. Defenses are going to have to wrap up and drag players to the ground. The GDFL.

The NFL is QUICKLY becoming a 2 hand touch league. I predict a new rule in the next couple seasons will be that you cannot hit a WR until he catches the ball.

"May have been a helmet to helmet hit"? What video replay was this author watching? Somehow there was a penalty on the Pats on this play, but not the guy that knocked Danny out. The announcers had already praised tacklers for proper form on previous plays where they hit below the shoulders and wrap up the guy with the ball. But they never said a word about this hit.

any hit to the head of any sort should be penalized.  football players can TACKLE. require players to tackle!

@riley8

you said : "I predict a new rule in the next couple seasons will be that you cannot hit a WR until he catches the ball."

LOL  !!!!!

it's called "pass interference".....

@riley8 What in God's name does that have to do with the hit that Amendola took?

@riley8 Ummmmm you already cant hit him until he catches the ball.  Hitting him before is considered pass interference.

Excellent idea... Tackling should be only way to bring ball carrier down. The "body missile" style of bringing receivers down is doing too much damage.

@StuartJacoby Not many tackle any more.  It is more like bumping the guy up or trying to strip the ball other than WRAPPING him up like they did before

@StuartJacoby If you don't want to get hit in the head, don't lead with your head! When a player lunges head first for a first down, where is the defender supposed to hit them to prevent a first down? How do you "wrap up" a guy leaning forward at a 45 degree angle?

@lethalclamchowder @StuartJacoby That was an intentional helmet to helmet hit. Look at the video - Bush was leading with his helmet, which is supposed to be a penalty. This as nothing to do with whether he was catching the ball, or out of bounds, or defenseless. Intentional helmet to helmet contact is a violation - period.

@lethalclamchowder @StuartJacoby EXACTLY.  We have super fast athletes running around as fast as they can, but they need to slow down and pick where they hit people?  Ridiculous.
