On Friday evening, South Dakota police confirmed to NFL Media that the two-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson died from injuries suffered during an alleged domestic abuse incident. As we reported earlier Friday, Peterson missed practice on Thursday to travel to South Dakota for what was called ‘personal reasons.’ Peterson’s two-year-old son was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital on Wednesday after suffering a severe beating. Twenty-seven-year-old Joseph Patterson, who had been dating the boy’s mother, is being held without bond at Minnehaha County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery of an infant.

The police are withholding the name of the child, per the family’s request.

Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press said via Twitter on Friday morning that he spoke with Nelson Peterson, Adrian’s father, who told him that the child is indeed Adrian’s.

“We are asking for prayers and for respect for our family as deal with this tragic situation,” Nelson Peterson told Jensen. ESPN’s John Clayton confirmed the report.

According to Sioux Falls Police Lt. Blaine Larsen, Patterson was the only one home with the boy, and it was Patterson who called the police. Patterson was arrested on Thursday evening after an investigation.

Peterson returned to the team’s Winter Park facility in time for Friday’s practice. The Vikings will host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

“He had a difficult day,” head coach Leslie Frazier said. “We expect him to play, but we’ll talk more over the next 24 hours.”

Before it was known that the boy had passed away, Peterson told local media that he would play “without a doubt,” and asked that his privacy, and the privacy of his family, be respected.

“Football is something I will always fall back on,” he concluded. “It gets me through tough times. Just being around the guys in here, that’s what I need in my life — guys supporting me and just being able to go out and play this game I love. Things that I go through, I’ve said a thousand times, it helps me play this game to a different level. I’m able to release a lot of stress through this sport, so that’s what I plan on doing.”

It is not known how or if this horrific development will change Peterson’s plans.

Another sad twist to all this is that our running back as at least two other children out there with other ladies.  I feel sad for his loss and i especially feel bad for this young child but maybe he/Adrian needs to skip the game tomorrow and start thinking of the bigger picture called life.

Alleged?  I guess the child is allegedly dead too.

Prayers to the family.  The idiot better be glad he is in jail.  As a father, I know that if he was not he would be dead and Peterson would be in jail!!!!!!!!!!!

A question for those making the rude, cruel comments: How many of you also think that the name 'Redskins' isn't offensive? I ask because both are racist, so I'd like to know. I mean, you do KNOW how offensive you're being, right?

...and the first thing that came to mind for most sports fans was probably: "will Adrian Peterson play on Sunday cause if he isn't, I gotta redo my fantasy lineup"

aside from losses amongst family and friends, this is one of the saddest stories out there. child abuse is so common, but to actually kill a two-year old? i was trying to think of one instance where maybe a stressful situation like a crying child could push somebody over the edge. but a two-year old? that loser should never have been allowed to be alone with that child and although i know she is suffering over her loss, the mother deserves a huge part of the blame.

It must be hard looking after one particular son when you have like 10 other kids all over the country with 10 different mothers.

I am not surprised by the immature and biased opinions by some of the few ignorant degenerates of our society. The truth is that Peterson was not in control of his sons day to day care and may have had reasons for the estranged relationship with his sons mother. The mother chose to live with a man who had a criminal history of domestic abuse and we don't know why. Unfortunately domestic abuse and child abuse occurs to often, even in the United States.

  • A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds
  • More than four children die every day as a result of child abuse.
  • It is estimated that between 50-60% of child fatalities due to maltreatment are not recorded as such on death certificates.
  • Approximately 80% of children that die from abuse are under the age of 4.
  • More than 90% of juvenile sexual abuse victims know their perpetrator in some way.
  • Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.

Please help stop violence against children by reporting abuse and educate yourself on the laws in your state when you suspect abuse. Sometimes we are the only ones who can help a child who doesn't have the means to get that help.

Wow. The troglodytes have really come out of their trailers for this story.I am stunned by the racist vitriol of these comments. I think SI should close this board.

Please, for the sake of humanity, lets just do away with the ability for people to post comments after articles...the below ignorance and childish one upmanship at the expense of a now passed away child and his father...whom none of us know much about beyond he runs well...is proof enough that a majority of Americans either cannot handle and/or don't deserve this privilege.

@JohnStevens Are you talking about yourself ? Your black racism comes through. Your blind obsession with anything black makes you intolerant and hateful of any other opinion. Would you say the same thing if blacks attack a white man for the same reason ? Which they frequently do. Look at how many rapes and violent crimes are committed in USA everyday by blacks on whites ? Just because you look white and obsessed with everything black does not make you NOT a racist.

Your kind of racism is more dangerous.

@PatrickBatemanVP Exactly. I'd bet just about anything that AP couldn't even pick his dead son out of a photo lineup. No wonder he's playing tomorrow. He never knew his son. He didn't raise his son. This makes no impact in his life besides one less child support payment to make.

@PatrickBatemanVP It must be hard looking for ways to act like a condescending d.i.ck when there are so many stories about children being murdered to pick from.  Which infant's grave should I do a "i'm better than your parents" dance on today?   Must be so hard for you.

@salvaje50 @mystafugee Actually the first thing that came to my mind was did Adrian even know his kid? I doubt he could pick him out of a picture lineup. AP just knocked up some hoe one night about three years ago and out came lil' what's his name? He wasn't raising his own kid. Wasn't involved in his life. But now that the kid is dead, AP is supposed to get all this sympathy. Nah, I don't think so.

@donald5 @PatrickBatemanVP absolutely, donald5.  it never really ceases to amaze me (by "amaze", i mean "disgust") how easy it is for some to sneer from what they perceive to be their superior, moral height at others' pain.  when the time comes for them to feel that same pain, the pain we all invariably feel~~the loss of a beloved one~~*then* they think it's worth crying over... worth understanding and sympathy.  they don't talk in terms of blame or deservedness *then*.  they don't sneer at their own reflection in the mirror.  ahhh, irony.  signed, a mother who has lost a child.

I say, neither one of you has a clue. He is working, and you have no idea what the custody arrangements are for this child. He may have custody for all of the off season. So unless you are his family legal attorney and have some insight into his situation, shut the f up. And I know none of you are because if you were you'd be bound by client confidentiality, and wouldn't be allowed to say a word by law.

You haven't rebutted a single thing I've said factually.

What you HAVE done:  you've just insulted me, claimed the moral high ground (dishonestly, I might add) with your personal history, and gone on and on in a fact-free, emotional way.

Yes, I'd say you're the one with the problem.

@MidwestGolfFan @donald5 @kathmc @PatrickBatemanVP when did anyone tell you to shut up, mr. midwest? you make such fascinating leaps.  worthy of debate club.

okay hold on... when the kid's buried, nobody will pay attention anymore, according to you.  er... what is your alleged logical point here?  that nobody should pay attention now?

what you call cheap emotion is what i call connecting with what makes us all human.  of course, i've lost a daughter, a brother, a ma, a dad, etc.  i've lost more folk than i have left.  apparently, this to you merits dismissive scorn.. why again?  because you don't know me?  that's just a winning philosophy there.

rant and rave all i like.  wow.  have i been ranting and raving?  perhaps you need to look up these words, too.  you see, out-of-hand, pat write-offs are not only NOT examples of rebuttal... they have to make sense even to stand a chance of amusing amoebae.

'You're the one with the problem' ... again.  more rebuttal to die for, i can tell you.  just a tip:  you might wanna come up with a few new lines.  you're starting to sound like a broken record from kiddiecare's bot squad.

donald5

@MidwestGolfFan @donald5 @kathmc @PatrickBatemanVP

"Rant and rave all you want"

I suppose what you are doing doesn't apply in your eyes.  You hide behind some fake attempt at doing some sort of public service with your "rant" about avoiding a tragedy before it is too late and "ceases to be news".  Sorry to break it to you but the tone of your comments reveals your intentions are anything but altruistic.  Your rant will do NOTHING to prevent something like this from happening because it comes off like an angry attempt to feel superior.  If your intention was to prevent future tragedies, your comments would sound quite different.  I'm sorry you had to learn it on a comment section but you have a lot of issues.

MidwestGolfFan

@donald5 @MidwestGolfFan @kathmc @PatrickBatemanVP

I see.  I'm supposed shut up out of some kind of respect for the dead.  And when the poor child's body is buried, this will cease to be news.  Nobody will pay attention at that point.

The fact is, cheap emotion for someone a stranger is worthless.  Rant and rave all you like.  You're the one with the problem.

kathmc
kathmc

@MidwestGolfFan @kathmc @donald5 @PatrickBatemanVP perhaps you need to review the difference between "facts" and "opinions"?  it could help you with understanding the concept of truth.  you might wanna double check "rebuttal", too.  you also seem to suffer from a certain tendency to see yourself as gratuitously attacked... even while you are gratuitously attacking, and have been, right out of the gate.   of course, in this context, i am quite happy to be the one "with the problem."  i will take it as the supreme compliment it so truly is.

donald5
donald5

@MidwestGolfFan @kathmc @donald5 @PatrickBatemanVP Avoidable or not, maybe you should wait for the body to be in the ground before you start pontificating about a situation that you are only speculating about.  So GolfFan... I would assume you had a relative die at some point...maybe a mother or father.  Say they died of lung cancer or heart disease.  Do you think opining about how stupid they were for smoking or eating too much red meat is appropriate immediately in the wake of their death?  It may be the truth, but to think truth equals appropriate is completely moronic.  Maybe you should be a cop that deals with rape victims,,,, the first thing you would do with the victims is point out all the things they did to cause their own rape.  Sounds like what a normal human would do, right?

kathmc
kathmc

@MidwestGolfFan @kathmc @donald5 @PatrickBatemanVP  hmm.  smarmy, insincere mournful stuff? to a ma who has lost a kid.   that is just so rich.  i submit to you, sir, that your concept of "truth" is somewhat questionable.  however, as your very own words serve to illustrate the point i was making, i think i'll just let you stand as the not-so-shining example i will call exhibit B.  i wish you all the best in future, i sincerely and nonsmarmily do... just as i hope you are never forced to move beyond your grade school concept of "tragedy."

Attack the messenger for speaking the truth instead of smarmy, insincere mournful stuff.  He's pointing out:  this is an avoidable tragedy.

Lots of these athletes have baby-mommas and kids they never see.  Going down this road -- often with groupies who are by definition unstable -- isn't good for any kids produced.
