Oakland would reportedly offer Josh Freeman starting job; other teams in play

Recently deposed quarterback Josh Freeman, who was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week, is narrowing down a list of next destinations and would like to make a decision by Sunday night, reports FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer. Freeman told Glazer that on Sunday morning, and Glazer also reported that Freeman has received inquiries from the Raiders, Bills, 49ers, Packers and Vikings.

UPDATE (11:10 p.m. ET): The Bills are actively trying to sign Freeman, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen. Buffalo is expected to be without starter EJ Manuel for a “few weeks” as he recovers from a sprained LCL. Undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel is the only other QB currently on the Bills’ roster. Glazer also made note of the Bills’ interest, reporting that Buffalo asked Manuel whether he would be on board with a Freeman signing.

Schefter says that the Vikings and Raiders remain interested.

NFL.com’s Mike Silver reports that the Raiders are the one team that would be ready to make him a starter, which makes a bit of sense. Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Olson was Freeman’s quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay from 2009 through ’11. Freeman was inconsistent under Olson, but he did throw for 25 touchdowns and just six interceptions in 2010.

“You know, I’ve always been a fan of Josh’s,” Olson told ESPN.com on Thursday. “I have a lot of respect for him, as a person and a player, and it’s unfortunate to me to watch what happened in Tampa … really over the last couple of years.”

Terrelle Pryor is the Raiders’ current starter, and the third-year man has been dynamic despite a depleted receiver corps and an offensive line that wouldn’t pass muster on several SEC rosters. Pryor has passed for 624 yards this season, and rushed for 198 more, and he’s been the team’s sole offensive weapon at times. Putting Freeman in that situation might not provide the desired results.

The 49ers are interested in Freeman as a backup behind Colin Kaepernick, though Freeman seems to be angling for a place  where he can be a starter. He might get that shot in Buffalo, where EJ Manuel is currently out with a knee injury, though Manuel will regain the starting spot when healthy. The Vikings are also interested and asking how much Freeman was responsible for the problems with Bucs head coach Greg Schiano. But Freeman would struggle to beat out Christian Ponder as the starter (based more on the team’s insistence on Ponder as the starter than Ponder’s actual performance), and Matt Cassel has performed well as the Vikings’ backup. Unless the Vikings are ready to cut bait on Ponder, of course.

If Freeman wanted to take some time, clear his head and work on his fundamentals, the Packers and 49ers would be interesting destinations. Both teams have entrenched starters, but in Jim Harbaugh and Mike McCoy, both teams have outstanding quarterback developers. Harbaugh made a new player out of Alex Smith, currently the Chiefs’ starting quarterback, and Matt Flynn cashed in on a couple of performances in a favorable Green Bay offense as Aaron Rodgers’ backup. Flynn, by the way, was just demoted to Oakland’s third string.

Why update this article? It makes it obvious how ignorant the writer on this site really are.

Maybe they should update this since he signed with the Vikings last night.

Mike Silver should never be allowed to report on the Raiders . The idea that Freeman would come in and jump Pryor is silly . He could however replace Matt Flynn who was just released .

If they bring this bust in....hand over the starting job to him off the street....what a joke......If I'm Terrelle Pryor...and I've done everything asked of me plus much more.....I demand a trade immediately because he deserves  a chance to compete somewhere he's earned that.  Freeman is a cancer.

Dennis Allen has always been against Pryor starting throwing barriers up to his chance at success. He wanted Flynn and made the chance for him to start against the Skins. All this after they failed to give Pryor a legitimate shot last year with Palmer playing poorly and the team going nowhere. For whatever reason he will cut Pryor's throat the first chance he gets he is a weasel and cannot be trusted. Olsen is just as bad. They want Josh Freeman WTF?

STAND UP FOR TP RAIDER NATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes I wonder, when I read a comment like the 'drug addict' one below, if the writer is as ignorant as his comment would indicate or if is he just trying to get a reaction (Which he did, of course, I couldn't resist).  So how about it, are you really as out of touch with reality as you seem, or are you just kicking up dust? If it's the latter that's fine. I don't mind a little trash talk, but I'd really like to know the intelligence quotient here.  Dare you answer?

Nice Oakland takes a failed drug addict as QB.  Shouts out volumes.

The reason Josh Freeman has led the NFL in turnovers the past 2 seasons is because when Freeman goes back to pass the only person he looks at is his primary receiver. He doesn't try to find a secondary receiver, much less a third option. Freeman completed passes on quick slants and throws where Vincent Jackson was able to use his size and strength to over power defenders. His play action doesn't work because he can't sell play action to the opposing defenses. He has no filed vision can't read defenses and gets surprised by blitzes. That is why he has completed less than 50% of his passes and has the lowest QBR in the NFL.

@Fire Congress DA and RM made a commitment to Flynn. They finally realized that commitment was a mistake. Now, they are committed to TP.

They have seen Pryor actually play QB, before they made this latest decision. It was obvious to everyone who watched the two QBs play in the preseason, this was the right choice all along.

@Fire Congress Boy. Rai-duh fans are even dumber than I had believed. Yes, head coach Dennis Allen is against one of his QBs succeeding. The paranoia in Raiduh Nation is hilarious!

@HarshRealities I think he needs a lot of work, but could do okay with the right coach. Which Greg Schiano is not, of course. I hope he gets a chance.
