Donte Whitner no more: 49ers safety plans to change last name to ‘Hitner’

NFC West, San Francisco 49ers

Donte Whitner is third on the Niners with 22 tackles. (San Jose Mercury News/ MCT /LANDOV)

After he was fined $21,000 by the NFL for his Week 4 collision with St. Louis receiver Chris Givens, 49ers safety Donte Whitner designed a bunch of T-shirts (yours now for just $28!) with the hash tag #LegalHitner on them in protest.

He’s apparently ready to take his indirect protest one step further:

Whitner also plans to directly contest his fine, announcing on Tuesday that he would appeal the punishment.

“If the intent isn’t there, I don’t know what we can do as players,” Whiter told the Mercury News. “Maybe we should put flags on and pull. Maybe fans will like that. Maybe not.”

Kudos to Whitner for commitment to the bit, especially since (as he pointed out) this is his first fine for an unnecessary roughness penalty.

But two things real quick here: 1. Basically taunting the NFL with this name may not be the smartest move, financially; and 2. “Hitner” is awfully close to “Hitler,” isn’t it?

Even if Whitner follows through on the name change (the 49ers say he has started the legal process, but nothing is finalized), the NFL will have to give the go-ahead on the switch regarding Whitner’s jersey — you might recall the hubbub created when Chad Johnson legally changed his name to Ochocinco just before the 2008 season. The NFL did approve that moniker (as one word). The explanation given by league spokesman Greg Aiello at the time: “It’s his legal surname.”

It's a good thing these dudes can play football....because a great majority of them are dumber than a box of rocks.

I'm a 49er fan...and this is embarrassing.

Stupid, stupid move by a player I thought was smart.

My first thought was the same as a lot of others. He's one typo away from sharing his name with a really, really bad guy.

Shouldn't blame Donte but his agent for this.  Donte is too stupid to figure and spell that on his own

Well, a lot of people are reading this article and ESPN will definitely "discuss" it tomorrow in one of their stupid "debate" shows ... as Donte is looking to get attention, he's succeeded.

The "Hit" thing I can understand. The "-ner" part... Man, I just don't know why you'd want to go anywhere close to that.

Good thing his name isn't Whitler!

Joining Chad (Whatever His Name is Now) and Metta World Peace.  Such noble company.

Sure you want to do this?  Especially with a name that could easily be mistaken for one of the most poisonous monikers in history?

Donte isn't going to change his style of game. He's always cared about the well-being of his opponents and never tries to deliver dirty hits. He plays the game hard. It's too bad the NFL of today wants to rid itself of one of the staples that makes it exciting; the nasty hits in the middle of the field.

Might as well turn it into touch football at this rate.

@ezwriter69 My very first thought was the same.  How could he not see the problem with this?  Does he have an agent?  If he does, better than even chance he is Jewish - how ironic!

@donald5  5th grade is a stretch for many of these guys. Monkeys are smarter than most

@dukhobearl Given the complete disinterest in history that many younger people have, it makes me wonder if he even knows who Hitler was or why he's hated. C'mon, man!

@dukhobearl   He took one ketter off of his name.  What is so hard to understand?  Quit giving dead people power.

@MidwestGolfFan Yeah, and OchoStinko was too stupid to realize that he didn't even change his name to his jersey number (Ocho Cinco means "Eight Five", not Eightyfive, which would've been Ochenta y Cinco).
