Cowboys DT Jason Hatcher blasts Tony Romo after practice audible leads to pick-six

Jason Hatcher vocally expressed his displeasure with Dallas’s offense at a recent practice. (Sharon Ellman/AP)

You may not know his name, but Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Jason Hatcher is one of the NFL’s most disruptive interior linemen. In 2012, as a 3-4 end in Rob Ryan’s defense, he racked up four sacks, 11 quarterback hits, and 20.5 QB hurries. Pretty impressive for a guy bulling through the middle of the line. In 2013, through two games as a tackle in Monte Kiffin’s 4-3 scheme, he already has two sacks and seven QB hurries.

Now he’s disrupting his own quarterback — and not just in practice drills. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Hatcher blasted Tony Romo in practice this week when Romo audibled away from a designed run play and threw a pass that led to a pick-six the other way. “Hatcher and others have been frustrated with Romo audibling away from runs,” Rapoport wrote on Twitter.

The Cowboys have run the ball just 31 times to 92 passing attempts this season, and they face the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. The Rams tied with the Broncos for the NFL lead in sacks with 52 in 2012, they have six this season, and the Dallas offensive line doesn’t protect the pass well. Romo has just one interception in 2013, but he ranks 21st in Football Outsiders’ efficiency metrics among qualifying quarterbacks. Clearly, more is expected of the man who signed a six-year, $108-million contract extension in March.

Because of the inconsistencies in Dallas’ offense and the variable quality of his pass protection, Romo has been playing through rib injuries since he was hurt in the season-opening win over the New York Giants. But as Hatcher said in a team meeting this week per Jean-Jacques Taylor of ESPN Dallas, the Cowboys must be singularly committed to winning.

Hatcher spoke about overall team improvement and playing for more than a paycheck in an F-bomb-filled soliloquy, according to the report.Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett had different veterans talk to the team in the preseason, but Hatcher has taken it upon himself to take it to a different level. He’s got the performance and stats to back it up, and we’ll see what the effects are.

“All positive,” Garrett told the NFL Network’s Mike Silver. “You want your leaders to lead. It’s good for people like him to speak up.”

Defense gave up 30 points to San Diego 20 of them after the Cowboys were leading 21-10. Defense could not stop San Diego in 2nd half. Offense never had ball .

Gave up 51 points to Denver and this POS has the nerve to open his mouth. GFU

better watch out or he might be gettin' a beatdown from Romo's BBF Whitten.

It wasn't even a pick 6.  Romo has only thrown 1 pick this year and the defender got tackled around the 10 yard line.  That and Hatcher said it isn't true so there is that.

Cowboys deserve everything that happens to them after giving Romo a huge contract extension. He has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory way too many times for me to remember all of them. When you have an ego-maniacal owner like Jerry Jones who thinks he is football's answer to Einstein, but in reality can't hold Forrest Gump's Jock, you get the kind of dysfunction that leads to 1 playoff win  in 15 years or more. Poor Cowboy fans stuck with this loser until he croaks.

Even if this story isn't true, someone on the team needs to be in Romos face. His "mistakes" are the reason Dallas can't close games.

This is a bull crap story. This never happened, according to Hatcher....Quit writing fake stories, Mr. Sheep...

Garrett, Hatcher, Romo, Witten, Ware, and pretty much every player on the team asked about this has said flat-out that this *didn't happen.* This comes from ONE source - Rappaport - and has been thoroughly discredited/disproven, yet SI is still running the story...? I guess if it generates links, the truth is irrelevant...

Cowboys need a team spokesman. Romo meed to take some verbal abuse from his own teammates. Maybe he will get the picture... No pic six, nor turnovers...

Hatcher is adamant that he did not say anything about Romo last week.  Wonder who is lying?

who in the hell besides jerrah thinks it a good idea to let tony f'n romo call his own plays?..HOW could that turn into a good thing?

It needed to happen. Romo is not a leader, like it or not. Not his strong suit, and it is great that he was able to listen. You can continue to use the same language when you audible, or the same gestures and think a player is not going to listen and jump a route. If you are going to audible at the line of scrimmage, then when you the offense goes to the sideline the point that we used as an up route now the same point is a slant...Look at how much better Marty Bennett is one can only think how much better than Witten he was and how he would have helped our offense...I wish Tony would make a committment to Dez...

When is the last time we have heard about Brady or Manning throwing a pick six in practice?  Never, and not because they have never done it.   This is a typical Romo-hating story.  I have an idea, lets talk about Eli and his crappy season so far...oh yeah I forgot, "he" has won two superbowls on two lucky throws.  I wonder if Eli's defensive linemen have anything to say about his 7 interceptions this year.  Puke.

He is not a coach and he is not on the offense....so just STFU!  Did he happen to see what Romo did today?  If the coaches have an issue with it, then it is their place to say something...not some DT.  Maybe it was what the coaches wanted...how the hell would Hatcher know.  I would love to see what would happen if Romo went up to him and told him he was doing something wrong.  I am sure he would take it as constructive criticism.

Well, it seems Hatcher needs to stfu.  What did he do today?  And he apparently is not able to get a $100+ salary for his performance.

Sorry, but Romo was 'Stellar' against the Rams, while Hatcher F'ed with a Roughing the QB Penalty which cost an Int & led to a Ram TD...   I like Hatcher, but Romo is 5 times the player Hatcher is...  Sit down & Shut the F' Up Hatcher...

I'm hoping the results of the game will help convince Romo that maybe he doesn't always have to win it by himself.

Here we go, overusing the fashionable word "disruptive" again.

Only on a Cowboys thread do you see insane negativity the same day as a 31-7 blowout in which the two aforementioned players (romo/hatcher) had great games.  @Steve Phillips Hatcher had a sack and disrupted Bradford all day.  @JesseGonzalez Redskins are back to their losing ways so no one cares. @Matthew W JJ drives us all crazy but find me a better QB who is available. It would only get worse. @Rickapolis @WHO*IS*ESPN Same old hate on same the day he throws 3 TDs and 0 INTs.

Y'all need to get a new catch phrase.  Seriously.

Steve Phillips

Maybe Hatcher ought to keep his mouth shut and rush opposing QB's since it is 31-7 Cowboys over the Rams

Who are the Cowboys gonna get to play quarterback?  Orton?  Give me a break.  Spoken like a true Redskins fan.

Jerry Jones single handedly is keeping the Cowgirls down.

So many of his decisions as GM have ensured that the team is a joke. Throwing that contract at a widely known and proven so-so QB who can't get the job done when it matters should be enough to make Owner Jones fire GM Jones.

Fire Jones and Fire Romo then watch your team get better.

Nothing will change in Dallas as long as Romo is their quarterback. Even Dallas fans know that.

Hatcher spoke about overall team improvement and playing for more than a paycheck

Funny, Hatcher, you do know you are in the NFL where it is all about SELF? Please Romo is only out for the money and women.  he is NOT a QB you want.

@eddie767 $8 points and the d gives 51 and its Romo's fault because he is put in position that is always on his shoulders.

@RussellFuller He's only had 1 pick this year and it wasn't even a pick 6.  Romo hasn't been lights out this year but he's better than he has been.

@rjohn445471 Dude, quit being an idiot and speak of things you have absolutely no clue about...And who ARE YOU to say that Romo isn't a leader?

@FrankJSvet Luck? Of the throw or catch? You think getting to the SB was luck also. Good grief, one bad season does not make a player.

@Rottie20 ""You want your leaders to lead," Garrett told Silver. "Jason's been a good player here for awhile, and it's good for people like him to speak up." www.nfl.com

Again, Romo only threw 24 times and for only 210 yards and the Cowboys won 31-7. Looks like he listened and it worked.

@LindyRidinger I kind of don't get you guys. Romo audibles to a pass ALL THE TIME and  he's got a lot of shiny stats and one playoff win to show for it. I'm glad somebody finally said something to him and frankly, it might be just what he needs to take him to the next level. Yeah, the Cowboys blew out the Rams today. And they accomplished that without Romo even throwing for 250 yards and with the Cowboys -- stop the presses -- RUNNING THE BALL MORE THAN THEY THREW IT! I don't know that this is a recipe for the Cowboys to win every game, but the sooner that Romo learns that it's not all about him, the better for the Cowboys.

@PaulSharpe ""Defensive Game Ball: Jason Hatcher

Going into this game, my study of the Rams offensive line led me to believe that they could have some problems handling the Cowboys defensive tackles. For the third straight game, I felt like Jason Hatcher was outstanding. For a player who I had my questions about staying consistent in this scheme, he has more than proved me wrong. Hatcher played with explosive quickness and power. He was disruptive on the move and was relentless in the way he attacked the pocket. His play did not allow Rams quarterback Sam Bradford any room to step up and make a throw. Hatcher was quick to shed blocks, and he was technique-sound the entire day. His play overall caused this Rams’ offensive scheme huge issues."   www.dallascowboys.com

@Matthew W Not that the QB rating is the best gauge but before last year, broken rib + punctured lung, Romo had the 2nd highest QBR of all time.  So I wouldn't go as far as saying "so so".

PaulSharpe
PaulSharpe

@Matthew WYeah, that's why Romo has Dallas all alone in First @ 2-1, with Philly @ 1-2, & Wash/NY sucking gutter-juice @ 0-3   #toast..    BTW Romo has best 4th qtr QB rating of all active QB's...   Better than Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Peyton, Eli...etc...    So much for 'choking'....

@j7apple @FrankJSvet j7apple look at Eli's career stats 83% QB rating. Ints because he is a pansy. He has always had a running gan=me and offensive line except for last two years and look what this Elite ha,ha,ha QB is doing.

His 2 SB wins were NEW ENGLANDS give aways. He has a horseshoe up every orifice he has.

What about the defenses he has been able to lean on. You have no clue most idiots don't.

Dallas4ever
Dallas4ever

@beirutwedding @LindyRidinger Why don't you go to Beruit because you know little if anything about FB. You need an offensive line to run. They haven't had one. You need good RB's and they don't have them. You need a good GM to make those things happen and they have JERRY JONES.

Get it ,its always been on Romo's shoulders. 48 points and a team loses. Where was the D where was it in San Diego.

beirutwedding

@PaulSharpe @Matthew W Um, are you saying that you think Romo is a better QB than Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning? Is that really what you're trying to say?
