Cary Williams-Riley Cooper scuffle suggests larger issues in Philadelphia

NFC East, Philadelphia Eagles, Uncategorized

Fights during practice don’t usually mean much — it’s just guys blowing their tops for a minute during rehearsals that can be physical, whether the NFL likes it or not. However, the Thursday scuffle between two Philadelphia Eagles — receiver Riley Cooper and cornerback Cary Williams — might be indicative of larger issues. Quarterback Michael Vick was the one breaking up the fracas, which started after Williams batted a ball that Vick threw to Cooper. Williams and Cooper went at it for a few seconds, were separated, and Williams then started walking after Cooper, jawing all the way. At that point, Vick physically restrained Williams, and gave him a good talking-to.

After practice, Vick was congratulated by one reporter for being a peacemaker, according to Philly.com’s Les Bowen. Vick’s response? “I try to be the peacemaker, but these young dudes don’t respect me.”

“Our maturity level’s gotta be on a whole different plane. Regardless of who the catalyst was for the whole fight, that doesn’t matter. We’ve gotta be men. We’re not guys who are out on the street, fighting one another. We’re teammates … It’s game week. We don’t have time for that. I don’t. It’s a distraction.”

Cooper said that the fight was not related to the racist remarks he made at a concert earlier this year, which caused turmoil in the Eagles’ locker room. Cooper left the team for a short time before returning.

“Just one-on-ones,” he said. “Both being super competitive, going for the ball, and we were tangled.”

But according to Jeff McClane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, it was about more than that.

Williams, signed to a three-year, $17 million contract in March, missed most of the preseason with injuries, and missed OTAs for more interesting reasons — home construction, dental work and his daughter’s dance recital. He was kicked off the field for fighting with New England Patriots receiver Aaron Dobson during joint practices in August, and said after the Patriots’ beatdown of the Eagles’ defense that none of this would have happened if Williams were still with the Ravens and the Ravens were playing the Patriots.

The Eagles are getting ready to face the Washington Redskins Monday night. This is the last thing they need right now, but it would appear that at least two of their players feel a need for ancillary drama.

If ANYONE feels that it is OK to use the "N" word they are mistaken. If someone like Cary Williams has an ongoing  problem with Riley Cooper for having used the "N" word but uses it himself and does not speak up against black on black use of the word then that person is by definition racist. Cary Williams and anyone else who specifically singles out whites for the use of racist language but gives blacks a pass they are racist. And then there is the use of words like Cracker or Cracka. How is that any better than the use of the "N" word?

Everyone needs to show each other a little respect and it is NOT a one way street.  Don't expect to get respect if you don't give it!

Why is it that if someone whom happens to be black and someone whom happens to be white have any altercation and the black person is blamed that racism is always an excuse. You have to realize that you pointing that out all of the time in situations where it isn't warranted is racist itself. Vick is black and said that people need to grow up making a reference to Williams who missed work after he got a big contract. Are you, Washington, saying that it's ok for Williams to miss time and call out his teammates because he's black?

Wow, more than a few racist rants on this thread. Kind of sad.

Cooper made a mistake and is trying to make amends. He's human, we've all made mistakes. Williams, on the other hand, once a hot head always a hot head. Vick's assessment of his maturity level was spot on. Grow up.

White Guys Still Get A Pass For The N Word And You Want To Crucify The Black Guy? Nice To Know Racism Is Still Alive And Well In The U.S. And Still Being Cultivated By Cyber Punks/Cowards In Philly.

Williams should be fined and the HC should fine any player who uses the N word

As a Falcons fan, I hated what Vick did to the team. But, I hope he has a great year. He seems to have matured into a good leader.

1) SI needs to talk with Comcast sports before teasing us with video that won't play.

2) Williams has a chip on his shoulder that just doesn't include Cooper.. he needs to grow up.

3) Cooper will play longer and get more respect than Williams over their NFL careers.  Williams loud mouth and tendency to fight will have him on the side lines and on the streets soon.

a trial just decided that use of the N word by any race in the workplace is against anyones civil rights.  Does Riley Cooper have a civil rights case against the DB?

does anyone know what the security guard at the country concert did to get Riley Cooper to flip out?

Move along.  Nothing to see here.  This story is either the result of a slow news day or the need to fill the 24/7 news cycle.  I guarantee you there are practice dust-ups all over the NFL each and every day and they mean nothing.  This one shouldn't either.

Cooper got a few days off for using that word.  Will Williams get  them too?

Does Williams get a few days off to consider his choice of words?

Williams will fight anyone.  He's gonna be a problem if he doesn't start focusing his energy on the game.
