Texans DE Antonio Smith could be in big trouble after escalation of feud with Dolphins OG Richie Incognito

The history between Houston Texans defensive end Antonio Smith and Miami Dolphins guard Richie Incognito is not pleasant at all, and after what happened in the Texans’ 24-17 preseason victory Saturday, it could become a lot more unpleasant for Smith.

On Fox Sports One’s “Fox Football Daily” show, NFL analyst Jay Glazer showed exclusive video of Smith reacting to a borderline block from Incognito by ripping off Ingocnito’s helmet and taking a swing at him. In Week 1 of the 2012 season, the Texans and Dolphins faced off, and Smith was fined $21,000 for kicking Incognito. The fine was reduced to $11,000 on appeal, and Smith claimed he kicked Incognito to stop him from twisting his ankle.

“I talked to Richie about this today,” Glazer said on the show. “He said, ‘Luckily, I saw it coming and ducked down, and he got me in the shoulder instead of the face. But had he gotten me in the face, he could have killed me.’ So, he’s outraged. Antonio Smith was outraged last year when he was on the bottom of the pile and Richie was twisting his ankle around.”

Mike Pereira, the FOX rules analyst and former NFL VP of Officiating, compared this to an incident that took place between then-Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and Dallas Cowboys center Andre Gurode on Oct. 1, 2006. Haynesworth ripped off Gurode’s helmet at the end of a play in the third quarter and stomped on Gurode’s head, causing an injury that required 30 stitches to repair. Haynesworth was ejected from the game and received a five-game suspension from the league.

“They look at it as a non-football act,” Pereira said. “This pulling off of the helmet and actually taking a swing — they’ll be more aggressive with their discipline.”

No penalty was called on Saturday’s helmet swing.

Pereira also pointed out that in 2011, Smith was fined $7,500 for pulling off Gurode’s helmet in a game between the Texans and the Baltimore Ravens. The most recent Smith incident also brings to mind a play in a Thanksgiving Day game in 2011 between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers. In that game, Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh pushed Packers guard Evan Dietrich-Smith’s head into the turf and stomped on his arm. Suh was suspended two games for that move.

How am I the only one that sees incognito smashing his hand in between Antonio's facemask 2-3 times. Everyone wants to act as though Antonio did this unprovoked. But its right in front of you. Incognito always playing the victim lol. Getting old. I'd take a swing too if someone was jabbing at my face like that with the added history. On like donkey Kong. And god lord you dolphin fans are soft. Been three days and all y'all are doing is crying and protecting a known instigator. Lol. We are tired of tearing you team up anyways. Y'all are soft give us some competition.

What a total scumbag, should do prison time for assault.

With a history like that, there needs to be some real serious consequences

Funny I keep reading that Incognito's a dirty player and Smith was provoked.

But I don't see Incognito swinging a helmet.

Maybe the next time JJ Watt provokes a lineman HMMMMM.

Did anyone watch the video?  Incognito punched Smith in the face TWICE, before Smith ripped off his helmet and swung it at him.  You think Smith's head naturally snaps back like that all on it's own?  It is clear what instigated him.  Incognito is the same guy that tried to break Smith's ankle last year.

Where did all these racists come from? This has nothing to do with race. You guys are idiots.

This was very serious and in the NCAA or really anywhere, you'd get tossed for a season. At least 4 games. I heard they were considering 2 preseason games. What a joke.

It's hard to see on the computer screen but . . . this pulling off the helmet stuff has to be dealt with and using it as a weapon is something else.

that has to be at least  4 game suspension and a 150 k fine.  If he connects to the head of Richie then you would have a guy getting hit with a felony assault charge.  These black athletes continue to attack white guys with intent to serious injure.   I see it in the NBA all the time

More Black on White crime. Can't we all just get along, my brothers.

Incognito is the dirtiest player in the nfl. I wish he had taken his head off with the helmet.

He needs a 5 game suspension at the very least. I'm a Dolphins fan, so I'm biased, but he should be done for the year.

Suspend him indefinitely. These are very large men...if he would have connected with that swing he could have permanently injured Incognito. No place for that anywhere.

Wow did he really touch his face mask ? Obviously u have never played football stuff like holding and hands to the face happen on a regular basis During a game ! That does not give a guy permission to try and hit a player with a helmet . If this happened on the street he would be arrested for assault ! By the way it sounds to me like your the one pouting like a baby so shut up and be glad he didn't connect and get banned from the NFL for life dumbass!!!!!!!

@tedjefferies

I seem to recall the Texans D getting its butt handed to it repeatedly in last season's second-half.

Anyway, for sure Incognito provoked him.  He provokes everyone.  Always has.

But ineffectually swatting at someone's face-mask obviously isn't the same as ripping off another player's helmet and attempting to use it as a weapon against him.  Smith's reaction was extreme and grossly out of proportion, and he rightly has to pay the consequences for that.  He's very fortunate to only be missing 1 regular season game.  It's a light punishment for what he did, to be sure.

@randomdeletion Doesn't matter.  Incognito is well established (for years now) as dirty, but what Smith did here is nonetheless on a whole different level.  He removed a player's protective equipment, and then deliberately tried to club him with it.

Smith is gonna burn for this, and rightly so.  Incognito has played dirty against hundreds of players throughout the years, but only Smith has ever gone psycho like this in response.  There's no excuse.

@darkgoody Yeah the racist remarks are an indicator that the one posting it is a complete idiot.

Sounds good. Should kick incognito out of the league indefinitely for a altercation a year that he provokes. I'd rather defend someone defending themselves than a instigator that denies and involvement.

@leehwgoc Oh, please.  Get off your high horse.  Incognito caused Antonio's head to snap back TWICE.  That had more of a chance of causing injury than being hit in the head with a  PLASTIC helmet.  You act like it is made of steel.  It is freaking plastic.  He wouldn't even get a knot on his head had Antonio made contact.  Brian Cushing head butted a teammate when his helmet was off.  On the crown of the helmet.  It caused a minor cut, but not even a knot.  It did no real damage of any kind.

I guess you would be so terrified you would want attempted murder charges brought against someone if they attacked you with a plastic hammer.  I mean sure they could kill you.... eventually... after a few hundred blows or so... unless your head is made of marshmallow.

Well incognito pulled a ankle lock last season where does a ground he come into the context of football. Much less the ancient eye gouge. Pot calling the kettle black. Take a hike.

Should have connected. Richie is the scum of the NFL.

@tedjefferies What are you talking about? I never said Incognito was an innocent victim - just responding to the statement that that kind of stuff happens all the time in MMA and boxing. Let me guess - English wasn't your best subject in school?
