Riley Cooper is back at Eagles camp after excused absence

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen was the first reporter to drop this bombshell from the Philadelphia Eagles’ training camp:

Per Albert Breer of the NFL Network, Cooper’s re-emergence took many by surprise. He met with team officials at the NovaCare Complex facility, and will reportedly participate in practice and be available to the media after.

Cooper, of course, was excused from all team activities last Friday and told to seek counseling after he was caught making a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert in June. Cooper practiced with the team just once after the video went viral last Wednesday.

“This is all new territory and we are going to evaluate this timetable every step of the way,” the Eagles said in a statement last Friday. “He will meet with professionals provided by the Eagles during this period of time to better help him understand how his words have hurt so many, including his teammates.”

To add a little spice to this, the Eagles will be taking part in a joint practice with the New England Patriots today, which will make this the first time Tim Tebow’s ever been on a football field without anyone paying attention to him. Oh, wait — silly us. Tebow was Cooper’s quarterback at Florida, so he’s in for a media scrum of his own.

“The last few days have been incredibly difficult for me,” Cooper said in a statement before leaving the team. “My actions were inexcusable. The more I think about what I did, the more disgusted I get. I keep trying to figure out how I could have said something so repulsive, and what I can do to make things better.

“Right now, I think it’s important for me to take some time to reflect on this situation. The organization and my teammates have been extremely supportive, but I also realize that there are people who will have a tough time forgiving me for what I’ve done. The best thing for me, and for the team, is to step away for a period of time. During this time I’m going to be speaking with a variety of professionals to help me better understand how I could have done something that was so offensive, and how I can start the healing process for everyone. As long as it takes, and whatever I have to do, I’m going to try to make this right.”

Riley Cooper goes from being a totally unknown to a nationally known celebrity by just saying the N word on tape. others should do it as well. it's worth it. who cares if blacks are upset and unhappy.

The racist coming back.

I guess in Phili racism important only when you cannot play.

How do we know he is a racist, WHEN with a stadium full of white folk HE is in his comfort zone and feels 100% okay dropping the N word, BUT is too much of a coward to drop it in the locker room.

Should be interesting?  At least, his teammates know the real Riley Cooper.

Why do reporters and news outlets feel the need to mention "first to report"? Is it ego or is there a legitimate reason?  Rick Reilly looked the fool doing it.

Fooey to the ESPN "analysts" claiming that his absence wasn't long enough.  He apologized, he paid the fine.  Let it end already.

Bombshell?  Talk about desperation to continue making this a story.

The angry mob wanted Riley's scalp. (And a healthy scalp it is.)

But cooler heads have (so far) prevailed. The greatness of America is its tolerance and its history of providing second chances for those who are truly sorry for their offenses. I can't see into Mr. Cooper's heart but he seems contrite.

Michael Vick understands forgiveness. Let's follow his lead and hang with Mr. Cooper. If he transgresses again, it's time to say goodbye.

Glad to see Coop back on the field.............

Every person in America now knows who Riley Cooper is and a star was born.

sports are entertainment.  Arod, this guy are all distractions that are priceless advertising cause it brings people that have no interest in a given sport to the tv as a fan to see the spectacle.  All these horrid acts are great commercials.  There is no such thing as bad press.

America worries too much abut blacks feeling but blacks don't matter and cause most of the crime and trouble in the USA.

I want him to play so I can see him get his head knocked around every week. He is no hero. He's a punk. Loved watching him back away with his tail between his legs.

Cooper is a hero  to all white people for saying what he did as a man

joeshine730, this is what you said before.

Don't amend it.

Own it.

@CucamongaKing  How do we know he's not a racist:  because when J-Mac tore his ACL, Cooper was crushed.  He was one of the first players to come over and see if he was alright, stayed with him while the doctors where checking him out, and had a towel draped over his hung head when he was carted off.   Do you really think if he was racist, that he would be upset about a black player getting hurt, particularly with it pushing him into the starting line-up?   Or perhaps, is it possible that during a moment of weakness (while in a drunken verbal altercation at a concert) he let slip a truly horrible slur?

@maknoblauch First to report means you're the one who deserves credit for breaking it or when others report it, they're giving proper credit.

@yahzooman If the blacks are mad they can always leave as they don't matter. The N word has been used for 4 hundred years and will be used for another 1000 years to call blacks out.

@yahzooman I should point out this happened a month ago and Cooper knew about the video before it broke.

@joeshine730 You are a ignorant fool who hides behind her screen name with stupidity.  the sad part I know who you are.

@joeshine730 So, you're just another racist unable to understand anything from history or economic conditions.  Dumb fools like yourself should heed the old adage that it's better to remain silent and appear the fool than to type a word ad remove all doubt.

@joeshine730 Hey let's make it an all white league and see how good the league is then. Must suck to know the NFL would be nothing without black players for you.

@CooperSucks If other players go head-hunting the refs will call it and they will get fined or suspended. Players might not like him but I doubt they will lose some of their money just to get a lick in.

beercrackin'g8r
beercrackin'g8r

What'd ya want him to do? Spin it to make it look like he was sorry? He owned up--he didn't back away. He left (probably on guidance from ownership) and if you don't think the NFL refs will be looking for those taking cheap shots on him, your in another galaxy.

@joeshine730  You are ignorant and dumb.  I really hope someone kill you and you die.

joeshine730

@Kortez Tk @joeshine730 Riley Cooper became nationally known for making his comments about the coloreds. Probably a smart PR move for name recognition and a larger fan base which has grown by the millions for Coop.

CooperSucks
CooperSucks

@foxtheory @CooperSucks Probably right. Just hard to believe that who is lucky enough to play in the NFL would be so dumb to get caught on video saying dumb crap. You know how many guys out there (no matter what their color) would give there left nut just to step on an NFL field suited up?

CooperSucks

@beercrackin'g8r Really....Really? You don't think the guys wouldn't mind paying a fine to take his head off. Just saying. Can't wait to see him laid out.

@joeshine730 @Terry

And you're as big a coward as he is.

Nobody stopped him from jumping over that fence so he could fight all those n's.

He only fessed up when he was caught.

You have a strange way of choosing your heroes.

@CooperSucks @foxtheory And what about the 49'ers player who made a comment about not wanting to play with gays in the NFL in the super bowl week he didnt have to go to counciling, Cooper owned and and apologized without a written statement........

RobertJacke
RobertJacke

@Terry @joeshine730 @carolinatrooper He apologized just like all the other ball players that did something wrong and hopefully he wont do it again unlike some other NFL players who do the same thing over and over again
