Tyrann Mathieu: ‘I’ll never forget what Mike Mayock said about me’

Tyrann Mathieu will have plenty of eyes on him as he heads into his rookie season with the Arizona Cardinals — and plenty of doubters. The former LSU star saw his college career fall apart amid off-field issues, then was entered into the NFL’s drug program upon being drafted, meaning the league can test him up to 10 times per month.

The NFL Network’s Mike Mayock was somewhat on the fence about Mathieu heading into the draft. But even though Mayock kept his comments on Mathieu rather tame, the player known as the “Honey Badger” still plans to use those words as motivation:

Mayock described Mathieu as “a better football player than an athlete” on multiple occasions before the draft, before pegging him as a mid-round pick. (In fact, Mayock announced on the NFL Network’s draft broadcast that he had “won a bet” with an NFL coach by predicting that Mathieu would not be a top-50 draft choice.)

Mathieu eventually came off the board at No. 69 overall, landing in a pretty solid situation with the Cardinals. There, he is teammates with Patrick Peterson, who Mathieu named at the NFL Scouting Combine as one of the people in his “support system.”

“Patrick Peterson, Darelle Revis, Morris Claiborne, Corey Webster from the Giants. All those guys are pretty much my support system right now,” Mathieu said. “I call those guys, talk to those guys on a daily basis. They give me great advice.”

Mathieu has not played a snap since the 2011 season at LSU, so his learning curve could be steep as a rookie. If nothing else, though, it does not appear that he’s lost his confidence.

I hope he does prove everyone wrong, he certainly has the "TALK" down pretty good, but can he 'WALK THE WALK"? Only time will tell.

The "Honey Badger" is disillusioned.  I'm sure he thinks that all he does is right and correct.  To most educated college football fans and national league football fans, the "Honey Badger" will find his safe haven while most will look at him at a disgrace to the SEC and the NFL.  Keep looking or your honey, boy ... you will end up back in the Bayou from where you came.  Have a nice life!

When the honey badger is out of the league in two years I think he might acknowledge that Mayock was dead on.

I actually think that Tyr ann is going to do real well for himself. He'll catch a few balls plus he's so pretty  I can see him endorsing those new makeup products they have coming out for men. Eye shadow. Moisturizer. Lip gloss. That stuff. I bet he could even give himself a facial. Maybe he could even give Goodell a facial. And a moisturizer. Seems like more and more men are going that route...

Yeah, that's terrible what Mike Mayock said.  So insulting.

Mathieu won't forget what's been said about him. But I don't expect a lot of us to forget about his prior transgressions.

The kid's simply got a problem. He's really going to need whatever support system he has in the NFL. A shame, because he's a realtalented football player.

what did he expect people to do? he was tested positive 10 times,TEN times. TEN!!! tell me that is not a pot head. he will miss the doobie by week 7-8 and will be suspended before the end of the season. all he needs to do is just shut up for the whole season and not start talking trash before he ever plays a down in the NFL. grow up already

Call me crazy, but wasn't that a compliment to be called a better player than athlete? I know Mayock doesn't always say the right thing, especially when it comes to off field problems, real or perceived. But Mathieu should just prove the doubters wrong, the more he says right or wrong goes against him.

This so disproves the theory that Honey Badger don't give a $hit

He can play in the NFL as long as his joints allow him.

Saying he is "a better football player than athlete" is a compliment.. Mayock said he wouldnt be a top 50 pick and he wasn't, and he wasn't even close. I don't understand the gripe here, but there's not much that I do understand about this kid. Keep frying those brain cells Mathieu

You count on Morris and Revis for help, you might as well include Johnny Football for advice too.  But good luck with the "woe is me" attitude

I think it is very funny he has this great support system and yet he spouts off like this.  I wonder which one of those advisers said Mayock was insulting him?

Blow him a kiss if you want. He was simply expressing that teams wouldn't take you high. He never said you couldn't make it in the league, he just said you would need to improve to become a good player. Besides, one game changing play does not make a great career. No offense to him, but hardly any knows anything David Tyree did other than make that awesome catch in the Super Bowl.

Sounds like a lot of people hope this kid fails, while Manziel gets a pass for, "being a kid". That's interesting...

Its not that he smoked the pot its that after being suspended a couple times he continued to smoke until kicked out of football and because of that hurting his team...that's a poor teammate with a big problem...plus he won't be able to cover a 6'2" wr

@AH1252 You never got high in college? Did dumb stuff at 20?

And you're sitting here telling him to grow up when HE IS GROWING UP. He found mentors. Positive role models. He got out of the party situation. He's taking care of his business.

But nope, you're telling him to grow up while claiming his growing up isn't growing up.

@toanpela I give him 3 years tops in the league before he drugs himself out.

@ptbnl Not gonna happen anytime soon - not until he's out of the league - if ever.

Give it a rest.  JM has a lot of tweets to write and a lot of meetings to miss before he catches up with TM.  Besides it doesn't seem to me that JM is getting a pass.  His scrutiny is over the top.  As for the Badger I don't think Maycock was saying he hoped he failed.  To be called a better football player than an athlete is actually a compliment.  It means that you know you techniques and have great instincts.  Maycock has his doubts and that is what he is paid to share but didn't run down TM's skill set.  How many players are just the opposite and never make it?  Knowledge and skill set always trump physical gifts at the highest level  TM is short which is an issue but I still think he has a chance to succeed.  I think that he got drafted at all and that so many of us (yes I am a fan of his) follow him and root for him is proof that you are off base.  The posters reacting to TM's comments are frankly right.  We are all collectively rolling our eyes.  Using Maycock for inspiration is a great idea.  Talking about it when A> the perceived criticism was so mild and B> and  your own track record is so spotty borders on stupidity.  I surely hope you weren't trying to allude to some other reason why people might support one and not the other.

I hope he does "grow up". What does being a habitual pot smoker have to do with being a kid? I watched an interview with Deon Sanders in the offseason and the kid looked and sounded stoned out of his mind! Now, he may just be Fried, permanently, but this is a business. When he "grows up" he'll realize that a NFL team can't take a chance on a undersized, average speed, 10 TIME FAILED DRUG TEST, player with a 1st or 2nd round pick! He's lucky he didn't slip to the 6th! I'm rooting for him, I grew up around ALOT of Pot, and Pot smokers. I turned out just fine...after I grew up.

@JohnDThorpe @AH1252  did not get high in college out of choice!! had the chance to do it in every party, and even on campus and between classes.again, out of choice.I just did not want to try it because I know that there are high chances I would get addicted to it. not every college guy is a pot head. you would think he grew up after getting caught 1-2-3-4....... I dont think he has a footbal problem,he is very talented .I think he has other problems that will keep him from growing up and keep him from reaching high levels.

@DavidandTracyAgee Got to agree with this. JM is getting lambasted for the silliest of things. That kid might be a wreck before he even gets drafted. Guy cant pass gas without it going viral on the web.TM has been a problem already. Hope he keeps it together because we dont need more stories of gangsta youth doing gangsta things in thug life mentality.
