Maurkice Pouncey apologizes for wearing ‘Free Hernandez’ hat

The Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly planned to chat with center Maurkice Pouncey after he and his brother, the Dolphins’ Mike Pouncey, were snapped this weekend sporting matching “Free Hernandez” hats — a reference to the current legal situation surrounding Aaron Hernandez, who played with the Pouncey brothers at Florida.

Perhaps not surprisingly, then, Maurkice issued an apology Monday via Twitter for that apparel choice:

“I fully recognize the seriousness of the situation involving my former teammate,” Pouncey wrote, “and I regret that my actions appear to make light of that serious situation. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions.”

We’ve yet to hear from Mike Pouncey yet, but there’s a good chance he will follow his twin brother’s footsteps and offer up some remorse, too. Here’s the photo of the Pouncey brothers that surfaced on Sunday morning:

It was a weekend full of regrettable moments for NFL players. Both Victor Cruz and Roddy White already issued their own apologies for their reactions on Twitter to the George Zimmerman trial verdict.

Nothing that went on here will cause the NFL to step in and issue fines or suspensions, but Maurkice Pouncey likely was not the only one to hear from someone in upper management within his franchise.

I honestly believe that there are some people that post on here that would rationalize anything and anybody. Look, morons, there is a problem with players in the league celebrating Aaron Hernandez and advocating the release of a very bad dude that in all likelihood will be convicted of at least one murder. It is not a good thing for the league and it is not something that warrants the proverbial "1st amendment" cliche defense. Let's call stupid stupid and not rationalize everything!

Finally, Maurkice sees the light of day. This whole thing should never have happened in the first place

Just because these guys can play football doesn't mean they have a brain. In fact I would guess 80% of those in the NFL are several marbles short.

Not sure why these guys have to apologize for acting out on their opinions.  We all do it.  Just because they are supposed be rolemodels?  We are all human.

Really stid move! These guys forget who they represent! To make light of supporting someone who is accused of murder is out of line, teammate or not!

Pay the hell attention to what you are doing and saying!

All these thugs are saying what they believe so saying they are sorry later is nothing but a joke!! What is the league and teams going to do about this. Making threats use to be a crime!!

What are the Steelers and Dolphins going to do... cut them? Please. They were/are friends with Hernandez and have the right to support him during the lead up to his trial if they so choose. I could of sworn it was "innocent until proven guilty" and not the opposite. I wouldn't have apologized for s*%t.

I used to say "how do you know an athlete is saying something stupid?  His lips are moving."  I was wrong, this is NOT a necessary requirement.

Why isn't Hernandez called a "White Hispanic" by the media?  He killed a black man too.....

Thugs, idiots, stupid, ....

Everything written about AH is true.    All the facts are in:  the media supplied them and never gets anything wrong.  Kill the SOB and skip the trial.  Castrate anybody who thinks he's innocent until proven guilty.

We love living under a fear justice system, when it's us in the grip of that system, everyone keeps forgetting Hernandez has only been found guilty in the court of public opinion and frankly that means nothing... The Pouncey brothers knew Hernandez on a more intimate level and that's all they have to go by, No evidence, No trail or No guilty verdict, Until Hernandez is found guilty the Pouncey brother's opinions are just as welcomed as yours,  even more than yours because they knew the guy.

Yes there is freedom of speech, but that doesn't mean there aren't consequences to it.  There should be a stupidity fine here.

Let me rewrite that

"I'm sorry the fact that I was shown to support a man who, in all reasonable likelihood, is at least the accomplice of a cold blooded execution.  If no one had taken a picture of me, I would still probably be supporting this likely murderer but since my actions, a  fair representation of my thoughts, were broadcast to the American public, it has come to my attention that a VAST majority of people in this country found my thoughts on this case, as well as my public endorsement or Hernandez, to be completely stupid and disgusting.  I will probably maintain my stupid opinion but will retract them in the public's eye."

What does the yellow "Pending" mean on a comment?  Is that how moderation works on this site?  Pending a moderator review?  I never saw that before.

Exactly when was it that the twins thought this was a good idea? I well remember that you can be mighty stupid in your twenties, but you have to think a little bit.

Is this the weekend for NFL players to do idiotic things and then later apologize for it?  Pouncey, Cruz, White.  Oh wait, every weekend is the time for NFL players to do idiotic things they later need to apologize for.  Nothing new here.

@Sean29Your only "innocent until proven guilty" in the Court of Law .....not in public or the court of public opinion. 1st Amendment of the Constitution allows, by Natural Law, for all of us to have our own thoughts and express our feelings and opinions.  Obviously, the Pouncey's are doing this, but that doesn't mean or discount that the majority of people who, based on the overwhelming evidence against Hernandez, post their opinions that its at best, poor taste and at worst, ignorant and insensitive. Now if they were fined or suspended it would be ridiculous and unfounded but last I checked we're still allowed to tell people they're morons and making themselves out to look like uniformed idiots.  This only hurts their image and any perception that they actually have some kind of college education. Period.

@Action Lots of people drink, alcohol alone does not explain the mind numbing stupidity of some NFL players.

Thank you for you opinion , on the matter, your knuckles must get awfully scraped up dragging them on the ground all day like you do..,  and those arms must get tired from constantly raising them to swat the flies  circling your mouth breathing head...

Can  you say backwards, i know it is a big word, but try.....

I hope you or your loved ones are never caught in the same system that you long for

@friendly--neighborhood--scrawler Hate to break it too you but Hernandez is guilty as they come,, its no way he does all the things that he did to cover himself if he is innocent...I know we are suppose to wait till the trial but all the facts don't lie in this case,, He is Guilty!!.....to much evidence its noway he had nothing to do with it!,

@donald5 You have a future in this. Sort of an 'anti-apologist'. I like it very much.

@John4 Yup. Between your sentences I was thinking, 'What the hell is John thinking.. NFL'ers embarrass themselves like this every week'.

Sean29

They're morons, uninformed, and acting in poor taste because their opinion is different than yours? What if Hernandez turns out to be found not guilty, will all the people spewing nonsense in the court of public opinion issue apologies for being uninformed and judgmental? No they won't, they'll just move on to the next person to unjustly call "thugs, morons, etc"

friendly--neighborhood--scrawler
friendly--neighborhood--scrawler

@Mr. J

I hear you, but the system has to play out, in the old days a lynch mob would hang a person if they believe to have committed a crime,  where is that justice in that... The trayvon martin case, I am sure people found Zimmerman guilty  of the murder, i know this is different but in some ways it's not.. Zimmerman was told not to pursue but he did and end up killing an unarmed kid., I am sure if Zimmerman was armed he would not have pursued the kid.

The systems trail and balances is not for convicting the guilty its for setting the innocent ones free

kilo35
kilo35

@Sean29 So if Peyton Manning or Tim Tebow wore 'Free Zimmerman' T-shirts or Hats while the trial had yet to be concluded, you don't think that would be in poor taste or that most people would think it was moronic and there wouldn't be outrage?     Or now that he has been found "Not Guilty" they then wore shirts supporting the decision and glorifying such a victory of justice, that wouldn't be offensive?

You can't win for losing.  Nobody is supporting Zimmerman in the sports world, why?  He's been found "Not Guilty" by a jury of his peers...But a guy who smashes his cell phone & his "brand new" recently installed 16 camera security system before handing it over to the police is not hiding anything?  The secret flop house? Yeah, that's normal.  Posing with multiple firearms for what purpose exactly?  Just a "cultural" thing I guess?  The rental car under his name? Probably just a guy in the wrong place at the wrong time, could happen to anybody...

Rational people can at least presume he was involved somehow and an accessory.  Will you walk into any urban area where there are protests going on this minute and vehemently defend Zimmerman with signs and a bullhorn?  He is "Not Guilty" yet these informed, educated, and pillars of society in the NFL aren't apologizing for being wrong, why?

Sean29
Sean29

@Mr. J  - If they have all of this evidence... explain the constant leaks to the press and the fact that their "star witness" / informant is a drug and alcohol addict who "fell asleep" after he thought he heard someone get murdered?? LOL
