Jim Harbaugh: ‘No question’ Ravens got away with interference, holding

NEW ORLEANS — Down by five and essentially to their last shot in the closing seconds, the San Francisco 49ers called for Colin Kaepernick to throw a 4th-and-goal fade to Michael Crabtree. Kaepernick’s pass sailed high over the head of Crabtree, landing harmlessly out of bounds as the Ravens and their fans began celebrating.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, however, had a much different reaction.

Harbaugh, known for his animated and occasionally petulant discussions with officials, immediately began screaming for a holding flag on Baltimore’s Jimmy Smith. Crabtree and Smith were locked in some hand-fighting as Kaepernick released the pass, with Smith tumbling to the ground as Crabtree broke loose.

But by that point, Kaepernick’s pass had sailed out of Crabtree’s reach.

The 49ers also asked for a pass-interference call on 2nd-and-goal, two plays before Kaepernick’s final incompletion. On that play, Kaepernick rolled right and tried to squeeze a pass in to Crabtree — Corey Graham jumped the route and batted the ball away, on a bang-bang play.

“Yes, there’s no question in my mind that there was a pass interference,” Harbaugh said, “and then a hold on Crabtree on that last one.”

[si_launchNFLPopup video='b2c0023f1c0846e0bc57aa693b58a682']Here’s the last 49ers’ offensive play[/si_launchNFLPopup]. Should a flag have flown for defensive holding?

“The guy was holding Crabtree,” 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks said. “The officials called it as if it was a regular play and didn’t throw the flag. I think if anybody has seen it on film, they would say it’s pass interference.”

Replays may have supported the 49ers’ case — Smith did appear to briefly wrap around Crabtree — but the officials deemed the play legal.

Harbaugh’s anger carried over to Baltimore’s safety in the closing seconds, too. There were 12 seconds left on the clock when Ravens punter Sam Koch took a snap in his own end zone on fourth down. Rather than punt the ball away, Koch ran around in the end zone to kill time.

At least two Ravens got away with multiple holding penalties on the play — there were no flags. Of course, a holding penalty there would have resulted in the same outcome: a safety, a free kick and just four seconds left.

“Still haven’t gotten an explanation on the safety,” Harbaugh said. “It was obviously the intent of the Ravens to tackle and hold, but not one holding flag came out. It’s a good scheme on their part to hold as many people as they can, and you teach them to just tackle when you’re taking a safety like that, but not one holding penalty was called.

“I haven’t gotten an explanation.”

Look at all the hypocrites in this comments section who would be singing an entirely different tune had this been their team; and who would love Jim Harbaugh if he were their coach.  Harbaugh's brilliant and a great tactician  the 49ers have a loaded roster, and the highly talented Colin Kaepernick.  That's why they were in the Superbowl.  Not because of any calls or the refs.

Harbaugh is a whining baby. His team was lucky to even be in it at the end of the game. Just shut up and move on.

Correct...enough is enough...dang both teams got away with a few things going down the stretch...big deal.  Never any more happy than to see the officials let them play...and treat both teams the same way.   The only negative thing in the hole mess, Coach Jim refusing to let it go....get over it and save all that crap for next season!!

I actually use to like Jim H. since he was a Michigan player.  And the refs were terrible from start to finish in this SB.

But, the Packers were screwed royally versus Seattle which gave home field to the 40 whiners (when they played GB).

It might not have mattered but who knows?

Then in the NFC championship the Niners held the Falcon receiver on the fourth and 5 play.  How come Jim didn't cry about that call?  Oh, because he benefited from it.

Then in the SB your down big time and the power goes out which allows your team to re-group.

Boy the niners were screwed, screwed, and just screwed again!

Go cry a river Jim, because in a few months nobody will remember the 2nd place team.

My hats off to your classy brother and the Ravens!

why does it matter he get an "explanation"? if the result is the same knowing holding happened makes you feel better???????? Its pointless. As far as holding on 4th down as I've stated on a thousand blogs before Crabtree was pushing off if you can see the holding which did happen then don't tell me you didn't see the push off. Please don't tell me that was after the holding, he was pushing off all during the play. Thus is SF get a redo? I guess according to them it should be either 1st and goal meaning they have selective vision or a redo. Given they were ignoring plays all game like the obvious late hit on Joe Flacco a yard out of bounds they made the right no call. Simply put why didn't Crabtree just choose to avoid and thus make it obvious? Simply Jimmy knew the conditions and Michael didn't. Same with John and Jim. Listen Jim if it weren't for non-called penalties you wouldn't have been there in the first place.

Poor, poor Jimmy.  Mom always liked Johnny best!  BTW Jimmy, you didn't mention how you felt about getting to re-kick that field goal from 10 yards closer, and getting a score you didn't deserve, that even put you in contention at the end.  Poor Jimmy.

Oh BTW Crabtree made the contact on the so called hold . Good no call, Crabtree himself said it wasnt holding.  You whiner fans are proving to be as classless as your coach, I hope you feel the pain a long time.

Good God Harbaugh shut up! Question why didnt call some better plays down in the red zone when you have such a stud running qb. That is all on you there Chief.   No wonder they call you the 40 whiners.

No question Bowman held White to end the game against the Falcons. No question Torrey Smith was held 15 yards down field on a deep bomb.

Who's got it better than us?

The Ravens!

Stop crying and show some class.

The Super Bowl refs seemed to have been trained by MLB's Joe Torre who supported the infamous 'Infield Fly" call against the Atlanta Braves in last year's playoffs. Officals of any sort are at times absolutely pathetic & fully deserve the boos and hate mail they get. Baltimore did get away with alot in the Super Bowl, but only after the 49's gave things away in the 1st half & opening kickoff in the 2nd.

Jim Harbough needs to take a hard look in the mirror.   All NFL coaches are under a lot of pressure. Why is he the only one consistently throwing temper tantrums like a four year old?    There was nothing, other than the last name, that made these two coaches look like brothers during the Superbowl.   He's crossed the line between super competitive and absolutely classless.

Mark Stephens
Mark Stephens

Same thing happened in the Pitt-Arizona superbowl.  No call on the push-off for Pitts final TD and no clipping call on the ensuing kick.  In my mind, teams are taught that officials don't want to be the focal point at the end and so that is the time to cheat.  Looks like Lance Armstrong could be in the NFL...cheat to win.

But, the real point.  49ers best running team in the NFL an often unstoppable running game with Kap as the runner and no runs by him at the end.  The final four offensive plays were the result of a coach out-coaching himself.

MarkFrances
MarkFrances

After seeing replays, there is no doubt of significant holding and interference on Crabtree. The officials just didn't want to decide the game on a penalty. They "might" have thrown a flag if there was a weapon involved. Jim Harbaugh made a good call. However, he should have realized the graveness of the situation and known that in such a situation that a flag would never be thrown. The holding on the safety was hilarious. It was stated and it would have been interesting if a fair catch had been called and a "Paul Hornung 1975" free kick would have been tried.  It would have taken a monstrous ninety yard kick but it could have been done.

It just doesn't matter.  You can't change the outcome now.  Sorry losers at best.  You can cry to the NFL all you want but its not going to change anything.  Cry yourself a river, float a boat in it, and cruise yourself to dark side of the moon!

I did not have a horse in this race, and being a Patriots fan, I wanted the 49er's to win. Unbelievable poor sportsmanship by Jim Harbaugh. He was so out coached. The 49er's were stopped four times on weak plays. The ref's were not simply giving them the Lombardi trophy. The Ravens did what they do, kick butt inside the 10. Kaepernick was hurried every down and was forced to throw that horrible fade. Man up Joe5557, your team lost. Deal with it.

rvnmaniak
rvnmaniak

My God, Joe5557,  you must be Jim Harbaugh.  I can tell by the fact that you are out of control, a poor sport, and someone whose attitude likely affects his judgement, like when you call 3 stupid pass plays in the biggest series of your career, in spite of the fact that you're running back waltzed untouched into the endzone 4 minutes earlier.

The better team won, the better Harbaugh won.  I wouldn't hire Jim to take out my trash.  Shame on him for directing all attention to himself so that his parents couldn't enjoy the moment.  Instead, they all (including John) had to attend to Jim's hissy fits like he was a pre-teen girl.

If the Niners had played for the entire game they wouldn't have to cry about a "bailout call"

l.czolgosz66
l.czolgosz66

I am a Niners fan and was rooting for them last Sunday. But let us put blame where blame is due. The four play calls by the Niners in the last minute of the game were HORRIBLE! You were running the ball at will against a tired front seven, why in the heck do you pass the ball four times? It was terrible play calling and lost the game. That is on you, Jim.

MichaelYankaus

To the comments dissing Harbaugh, you're off-base. Yes Crabtree pushed off, but only because Smith was holding him, and he was obviously desperate to go for the ball. He was justified in trying to get out of Smith's hold... anyone would be. Further, it was a catchable ball. Remember "The Catch" featuring a high throw by Montana to Clark???? That would have been called uncatchable by the clowns ranting here, but it was catchable, and it took the 49ers to their first SuperBowl... And Crabtree would have won the game, but a weak Referee didn't make the call. Harbaugh isn't crying, jerk... He is stating a fact, and it is deplorable that the NFL let's pathetic referees work in the biggest game of the year. If it was YOUR team, haters, you'd be angry too. The holding call would have meant 1st and goal at the 2 yard line. And that would mean 49ers 6th Super Bowl. But no matter... This team will be back, and they will win 2 in the next four years. Watch.

mikey72851
mikey72851

The Oscars are still a couple of days away...I think Harbaugh is a lock for the "Best job of milking a no-call" of all time...If that was the only non-call of the game, I think he could make a case, but  also think he can put the majority of the blame on his team and their ineptitude when it came to getting it into the end zone in that situation...They had been letting them play the entire game...A worse mistake would have been to change that on the last play of the game and make a borderline call...

GregHerman

For all the 49er fans still crying over a call, when you look at the replay Crabtree was pushing off the db as well. In fact pushed him to the ground. With all that contact from both players the ref is no way going to throw a flag. It was a bad play call the 49ers lost and crying about it isn't going to change the result.

cowboys1960
cowboys1960

I thought there were enough missed calls earlier in the game to offset this one.  the ball was uncatchable in the endzone and the better team won and the 40 Whiners blew another one.   Too bad they can't live off the replays of "the catch".

Eric36
Eric36

Harbaugh is right. A flag should have been thrown. The receiver was clearly held.

mbiggsat
mbiggsat

The out & out mugging during the safety, had it been called, would have added precious seconds to the clock, enough for a punt return AND a play from scrimmage. The defensive players were tackled & there was no call, it was the worst noncall I'd ever seen because it was so blatant & right in front of the refs.

SLP
SLP

There was contact by both players in a physical football game.  If penalty flags were to be thrown, then they should have been offsetting.  And what does Jim Harbaugh have to say about the fact that the 49ers got away with an illegal late hit on Flacco on the series before that would have given the Ravens a new set of downs to get in the end zone and effectively end the game?  In the end, it's clear which brother is the more professional, class act.  Big Brother wins, and the better team won. Period.

fordtrouble
fordtrouble

No mention of the late out of bounds hit on Flacco that would have let the Ravens continue their drive 2 minutes prior. Yes holding yes on that play and prior to the hold offensive pass interference could have been called. Harbaugh is like Tom Brady the crybaby.

ChloeSmith
ChloeSmith

I don't like either team, especially the Baltimore Ravens because of Ray Lewis.  I am getting sick and tired of the NFL and the media treating Lewis like he is a hero.  He is no hero and should definitely have spent some time in jail.  I don't care for either one of the Harbaughs either.  Needless to say, the SuperBowl was a bust.  I did not watch this year.

historyaccessdotcom
historyaccessdotcom

Eric Wright, the former DB for the Niners, had it right during his commentary on KNBR in SF: "Was there contact? Yes. Is any official going to call it with the Super Bowl on the line? No. The DB did the right thing." Harbaugh should dial it down 20 percent; he'd be a better coach and his team would be less uptight. Too bad he doesn't have it in him to do that.

xflcommish

I'm not a fan of either team but you gotta call that on the final real play of the SuperBowl. The defender never made any effort at all to play the ball. None. I think the better team did lose...

@My name Peggy

Crabtree said it was holding, but there was no point in complaining to the ref as he had already decided not to call it.

Crabtree did make contact, he and Smith came together at the goal line, hand wrestled, and as Crabtree attempted to cut to the sideline, Smith wrapped his arms around Crabtree and had two handfuls of jersey.

Ridiculous no-call that tainted what had been a great game until then.

And before you make another mistake, no, I am not a 49er fan.

LP9086

@CalDad how about the hold on the kickoff to start the second half?  How about the facemask on james on the initial 49ers fumble?  How about the illegal formation on the first play of the game (no explination at all)?  What about the Raven player getting up and baltantly shoving an official?  Are you kidding?  IF you can't admit the Refs helped the Ravens in the game, you need to watch more football and learn the rules of the game.

Wrong - Time would have continued to expire off of the clock until the play was whistled dead.  It did not matter that the referees threw a flag or didn't throw a flag.  No time would have been put back on clock.  Get facts correct next time.

I've been a referee for 12 years at the high school level and the past 4 in D3 and D2 in NCAA. On one hand I agree with the sentiment that "if it's a penealty 5 minutes into the first game of the season, then it's a penalty in the championship game."  I also agree with the sentiment that the stirpes shouldn't decide the winner. (As long as guns and knives weren't used!) But at the end of it all, beyond bragging rights to my friends, my life doesn't change one iota. I'm still paying out the nose for gas, my bills still have to be payed, etc.... My life doesn't change one bit.

@fordtrouble HEY **SHOLE! First of all ***K Jim Harbaugh he has too many flaws!!!!! BUT STICK THOSE MEASLY 2 PENALTIES YOU THINK WOULD HAVE HELPED THE RAVENS WIN THIS GAME (BECAUSE MOST OF US INTELLIGENT NON-RAVEN FANS KNOW THAT THE RAVENS DID NOT WIN THIS GAME OTHER THAN THE LEAGUE SAYING THAT THEY DID!!!!!) UP YOUR ***KING **S!!!!! BECAUSE YOU THEN NEED TO ADD IN THE AT LEAST 10-12 PENALTIES THAT WERE NOT CALLED OR THEY WERE IN THE RAVEN'S FAVOR!!!!! HERE WATCH THESE 2 VIDEOS AND IF YOU ARE SMART ENOUGH YOU WILL KNOW WHY MANY MANY PEOPLE ARE LEGITIMATELY "COMPLAINING" NOT "CRYING"!!!!! SO ***K YOU!!!!! HERE ARE THE LINKS!!!!!

We will see if after you watch these videos if  you still feel the same way! Again as for Jim Harbaugh he can leave along with some of the coaching staff because he helped ***k  this game up so that the Niners could not allow the Zebras to be a NON-ISSUE!!!!!

joe57777
joe57777

@fordtrouble I like when you idiots bring up the word crying all the time. Is that what it is crying? Also what about the Helmet to Helmet hit on Crabtree during those 4 downs by the Niners near the end of the game? Hmmm? Back to crying. What if your wife get punched in the face by another woman right in front of you and a cop. But the cop doesn' t do anything about it but he should because it's the law or a rule. Now is your complaining about it to the cop called "crying"? Well you have a right to complain and the NFL or any sport that has rules. When they are broken people have a right to complain. Babies cry, grown people complain. And there were PLENTY of BROKEN RULES against the Ravens in that "Poor Excuse For a Super Bowl!" Referees have the POWER to CHANGE the outcome of a game. one missed Bad call here and there that Doesn' t effect the outcome of a game is no big deal. However, that is NOT what happened here!!!!! and you can realize that or you can stick the "crying" comment up your **S!!!!! Remember the FAKE Refs can JOB your team NEXT!!!!! Then you will be "CRYING"!!!!!

In fact, I call these Refs the "Mission Impossible Refs". Because what really happened here is that Ray ***king Lewis and his "bullies" went and kidnapped the real Refs. They tied them up and left them inside an abandoned warehouse somewhere. But first they copied their faces and made Masks and a Voice Track. Then they paid off some replacement Ref to wear the faces and voice patches of the Real Refs. Now you had Replacement Refs that looked and sounded like the Real Refs. Then Ray ***king Lewis tells these fake Refs to ***K UP the game for the Niners and to do everything they could to make the Ravens Win!!!!!

Now Really didn't it seem that way????? Well you could have fooled many people!!!!!

@joe57777  @SLP Lol!  The tears of supremely pissed 49'ers fans -- still gushing after a week -- make me laugh.  I'm not even a Ravens fan, but Jim and his Forty Whiners need to sit down and realize the better team won.  Or at least the team with better play calling.  Missed penalties went both ways through the game, and SF lost because the coaches and players choked on the last four plays... end of story.

judojnoble

@joe57777  @fordtrouble Rant and Raven all you want.  Your whining doesn't change the fact that Frisco lost the game long before the last play.  Shouldn't have been in that position to begin with.  Shouldn't have choked on the last four plays.  It was a good no-call.  The holding in the end zone should have been called, but wouldn't have changed the outcome at all (still a safety with 4 seconds left).  There were a few no-calls in either direction through the game, so it's hilarious to see fans of the SF Thugs whining because they think another team got away with playing like their own always does.
