NEW ORLEANS — A visibly agitated Ray Lewis refused to address during Tuesday’s Super Bowl XLVII Media Day a Sports Illustrated report that Lewis, while recovering from a torn triceps earlier this season, inquired about a product that includes a substance banned by the NFL.

In the article in the Jan. 31 issue of Sports Illustrated, David Epstein and George Dohrmann relayed a phone call Lewis allegedly had with Mitch Ross, owner of S.W.A.T.S. (Sports with Alternatives to Steroids). That conversation included discussion of deer antler velvet spray, which contains IGF-1 — a prohibited substance in the NFL that SWATS’ Christopher Key compared to human growth hormone (HGH).

Lewis emphatically brushed aside the topic Tuesday.

“Two years ago, that was the same report,” Lewis said. “I wouldn’t give that report or (the reporters) any of my press.”

Kevin Byrne, the Ravens’ vice president of communications, told ESPN that the team was standing behind Lewis.

“He denied using the substance discussed in the article, and we believe him,” Bryne said. “Ray has been randomly tested for banned substances and has never failed a test. We have never been notified of a failed test. He has never been notified of a failed test.”

Ross, however, insisted on ESPN Radio’s “SVP and Russillo” show that Lewis “used every product that I have.”

“Ray did what he had to do to get back on the field, that’s what he said,” Ross told Scott Van Pelt and Ryen Russillo. “I’m not telling you he didn’t use anything. He got on a protocol, he absolutely certainly did. … It was set up by me how to do it, and I even developed an armband for him to use at Day 7 to strengthen his triceps better.

“It sounds like he’s disputing it, I guess because he’s scared of Roger Goodell. Ray’s not the only athlete taking in the SWATS protocol.”

Ross mentioned Brett Favre, Carnell Williams, Heath Evans, golfer Mark Calcavecchia and baseball player Carlos Pena as others who have received help from S.W.A.T.S.’ products.

Ross also reiterated his comments from the Sports Illustrated article concerning a conversation he had with Lewis during the middle of the 2012 season. According to Ross, he texted Lewis mere hours after Lewis injured his arm against the Cowboys on Oct. 14.

“He called me after he got off the field and we got a plan together,” Ross recalled to Van Pelt and Russillo, “and we got him on the road to getting back on the field in 50 days.”

Lewis’ hour-long Media Day press conference took another contentious turn when he was asked about the 2000 incident in which Lewis was charged with obstruction of justice after the stabbing deaths of two men in Atlanta. Lewis told reporters: “Nobody here is really qualified to ask those questions … At this time, I would rather direct my questions in other places.”

He played a similar card during the brief moments the discussion turned to deer antler spray and Sports Illustrated‘s report.

“I’ve been in this business 17 years and nobody has ever got up with me every morning and trained with me,” Lewis said. “Every test I’ve ever took in the NFL, there’s never been a question if I’ve ever even thought about using anything, so to even entertain stupidity like that … tell (them) to go try to get (their) story off somebody else.”

would not expect a Thug like Lewis to admit to using anything banned. but please don't UPSET Lewis by asking questions he doesn't like.

How can you look at a guy like Ray Lewis crying hysterically during the national anthem or dancing maniacally on the field like he is on a combination of Red Bull and Angel Dust, and not think he is on something?

You don't want to agitate Ray Lewis, people have died for that. No, seriously, he has killed people for that.

For all the Lewis apologists, lets go to his favorite book for inspiration..."Be sure your sin will find you out".  He hasn't gotten away with murder.  Who knows about the deer antler thing, but where there's lots of smoke (accompanied by hysterical dancing), there's fire.  I'd love to see the "confidential" financial settlement he reached with the victims' families.  Added to supporting 4 illegitimate children, no wonder he has to go to work for ESPN right away.

I am sure all those athletes (and Mark Calcavechia) are overjoyed to see their names in this article....Given that I suspect they were expecting some confidentiality, I think we may be seeing the demise of this company.

A Johns Hopkins Professor chimed in that even if he wanted to get IGF-1 from this product he couldn't. It's not absorbed orally and is too unstable to . Here's the link. http://www.baltimoresun.com/business/baltimore-sports-blog/bal-ray-lewis-denies-using-banned-substance-during-rehab-from-injury-20130129,0,7725655.story. Also, I saw the press conference and he was not "Visibly agitated". Also, if the phone call was actually him, why did he not know that the spray wasn't put on your arm, but in your mouth. The caller is obviously someone who had not used the product. Also, I would like to know what the guy claiming to "work with Ray" means? Does this mean he went to his house, or does this mean he advised him over the phone and shipped him products, that Ray may well have never used, especially if he checked with his MD. This story is poorly researched, tabloid fodder.

Shame on you SI. In attempt to get attention, you are messing with the Superbowl. -The greatest sporting day in America. Your attention needing and selfish desires are not above the game and will assure that I will never subscribe to your magazine again. Even if it were true, which I hope for you it  is because I would sue the hell out of you if I were Ray Lewis and Baltimore (II am a Steelers fan by the way and  this even angers me), you should consider having some class and wait until the game is over. Goodbye to you!

If you read the SI story it is not as much about Lewis as it is about these snake oil salesmen at SWAT. These guys have a racket that convince athletes that metallic stickers can be tuned by "radio waves emitted from a Christmas ornaments" (SI) and Ray claims he only purchased stickers. However while SWAT says they sold Ray the deer antler spray (and other products) the levels of IGF-1 are so small that they cannot be detected or it simply isn't in the product as it claims.

What cracks me up is that everyone is talking about how SI's story revealed that Ray Lewis cheated by taking a substance that is banned instead of a real story. The real story is about how two people who were murdered yet the only person charged with anything was Ray Lewis who plead guilty to obstruction of justice.

Ray Lewis is on a pedestal and the national media is creating a story that has little or no bearing on the SuperBowl outcome. The SI story is a great story without Ray Lewis and doesn't even honestly focus on Lewis or his use of their products it just mentions it.

SWAT is luring athletes to buy stickers and antler spray in hopes it will be a alternative to steroid use. Maybe we should thank SWAT for their false hopes of athletic advantage and instead providing a very effective placebo.

Stupid waste of time article!!! Just trying to make a name for yourself! I'm convinced that a lot of people do not have their facts right about Ray, I think that okay because when he's in heaven doing his dance you'll be in Hell wishing you weren't so judgmental.

David Epstein and George Dohrmann...Dead Meat.  I'm investigating a report that these two were payed by the 49ers in an attempt to rattle the Ravens....No dice...Ravens by 21.

I'm no Ray Lewis fan, but is any of this really news?  NFL players on PED's?  A 12 year old murder case?  Pro football, basketball, and to some extent, baseball, are all moving towards a WWE mentality.   The players are pumped with illegal substances, the arenas are pumped with noise, fireworks, and artificial enthusiasm, and the fans just want to be entertained.  I'm glad I'm old enough to have had a chance to see college and professional sports when money wasn't the enormous controlling factor that it is today...........a time before ESPN.

But Lewis is such an honest Christian fellow, I mean someone who prays so much in public while dancing like a drunk turkey for the camera would not lie about this or to law enforcement.

Right?

After Lance Armstrong and Barry Bonds, I have no faith in Athletes who enter these types of controversies. Did Ray take the banned substnance?  I dont know but I am leaning towards Yes vs. no thanks to all the other greats who runined it for me.

Kind of like you told the police in Atlanta you had nothing to do with the altercation that night where two men were murdered. You didn't lie than did you, Ray? Oh! that's right you were convicted of obstruction of justice, so you did lie.

Lance Armstrong never tested positive either Ray. What's your point? And Lance trained as hard or harder than anyone else as well.

@deanthology Lance was accused by other athletes...Ray is accused (for the second time in many years) by an idiot that's trying to make money off of false stories. He claims he has recorded conversations but they haven't surfaced. No recording or positive test? So why is this a story once again. For those who do not know the same guy also said former Raiders head coach and former Raven's assistant Hue Jackson was given "free" antler spray to pass out to players and Lewis was one of the players. Nothing came out of that and now this guy is basically coming out with same lie in a different format...Why would a popular media source such as SI didn't mentioned anything about that. Ray was the one that mentioned this is an old story from two years ago.

Honestly is this guy try to out several players two years ago with lies, why in the heck would any of those players would ever deal with him? And now he has this innovative arm brace to strengthen muscles. Is an arm brace illegal? So if it's so great why not put it out on the open market for other sports medicine professionals to use? Sounds like a rat to me!

JohnP

@DomiNickTaylor  @Fifilo Why because he doesn't practice forgiveness? The guy is involved with a murder, gets away with it, and he is supposed to be forgiven? Certainly good Christians practice forgiveness, but they do not condone God's work of taking another person's life.

@DomiNickTaylor  @mcurleyjr I really wish some of this people grew up in an area that if you talk when a criminal is on the run you and your love ones are in great danger. This especially has an affect on you if you personally know of people or their family members that have been murdered for talking to the police before the criminal(s) were caught.

If you just saw someone commit a murder and you know that have the ability to harm you or your family members damn right you don't know anything until you know the murder(s) are behind bars.

The problem with the law is they feel like if they charge you with murder also that's appropriate to scare you into talking. Depending on were you where raised the number 1 rule when you are in situations like those is "I don't know nothing about nothing" while a criminal is still on the loose. Now taking the wrap for someone else is another story...but not talking initially to protect yourself and family isn't a new thing for young black youths to be blunt.

@JohnP  @Fifilo are you kidding me?!!! Do you know the facts!!! Ray killed no one, the two people he was with killed two criminals in self defense and they were acquitted by an Atlanta jury. Ray was charged with obstruction of justice for originally stating that he did not know who Killed the two thugs!!!
