Cam Newton flagged, not ejected for bumping ref
Cam Newton somehow avoided ejection Sunday when he angrily bumped referee Jerome Boger during Carolina’s game against Oakland. After taking a hit on a 2nd-and-11 pass, Newton leapt to his feet and aggressively yelled at Boger, who did flag the Panthers’ QB for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Earlier in the game, Newton appeared to kick an Oakland defender in the face following a take-down — another Raiders player, Tommie Kelly, was hit with a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness on the play.
Newton does figure to hear from the league this week, likely at least in the form of a fine if not a Week 17 suspension.
The GIFs of Newton’s two incidents, via SBNation:
Afterward, Newton said he apologized to Boger, and got caught up in the heat of the moment. As for the kick, Newton said that it wasn’t intentional, that he was just getting up, but upon seeing the replay he could understand why it was construed that way.
The Panthers did win the game, 17-6, their third straight victory and fourth in five weeks. Newton threw for 170 yards and a touchdown, plus ran for 60 yards and another score.

Go Hawks!
Harrison Smith got ejected for"shoving a ref"(it was more of a brush off) but you will never see them treat QB's the same as other players! The head ref said there was no malicious intent but i really don't think there was any malicious intent involved in the Smith case but he still was kicked out of the game!
Interesting spin on the same story.. Yahoo has raiders player saying they tried to hurt Newton. He felt he was hit way after the play with no flag which is why he was upset.. no mention of that.
@Brooklynalwayswins There won't be mention of that on this site. Trust me. They have waited weeks for Cam to slip up so they could write an article just like this.
@Hitman80 They even use the plays name but left out his quote. Oakland’s Tommy Kelly: We went after Cam Newton after Carson Palmer was hurt
@Hitman80 players*
Wow. Anyone with an IQ greater than 15 can see that the gif was sped up right before he kicked to make it look worse than it really was. Also, anyone with an IQ greater than 5 knows that Brady gets in the face of refs many times every year.
@Hitman80 Brady may get in the face of the refs every game, but at least he has sense enough not to bump into the ref, which typically merits an automatic ejection
@Hitman80
I was watching the game live on tv, and it certainly didn't look as severe as the two clips here- even in replay!
One word...."Punk" nuff' said.
@carjax1202 Yes when Cam Newton gets upset with a ref he is a "punk" and a "crybaby" but when Rodgers or Brady or Manning does the same thing they are passionate and intense and showing their competitive spirit.
@Simon @carjax1202 Cam Newton couldn't even stay at the same college for more than a year during his amateur days. And when he was at Florida, he got booted for stealing laptops. This guy is a punk, through-and-through.
@H2OPoloPunk @Simon @carjax1202 Good call..stealing lapops?? Nice..what a thug and a piss poor loser.
@Simon @carjax1202 You should be thankful he got the benefit that he did - had that been James Harrison bumping a ref like that, as pissed off as he was, he would have been ejected. Don't remember seeing Rodgers/Brady/Manning get up in a ref's grill like that.
Not only did he hit the ref he kicked the Oakland player in the face. What a fricking baby boy!! If he doesn't get the boot for the next game there is no justice in the NFL-NONE!!
@lonlashum Why don't you actually watch a game before you criticize him. He didn't kick him in the face he kicked him in the shoulder (It was more of a pushoff with his feet). The defender wasn't exactly blameless either. I understand that you probably hate Cam, but that's no reason to blindly criticize him.
@Simon; Look human. I saw the replay. The defender was trying to get up and was excited about the play. What did you see? He didn't touch the baby, he tried to jump up and baby boy kicked like a baby boy would do. He kicked him in the side of the head/shoulder. I can't help that you are his buddy and would fall at his feet if you were to meet him. Me, I don't care for him but he has the potential to be a decent qb, at best. He will never be a great qb. As a matter of fact he won't last 5 years as a starter. He will end up as a 3rd string backup. So you keep defending him and I will keep pointing out his failures. It makes me happy.
@lonlashum ...So besides my "childish rant about politics and football" which was in fact your doing, what's your overall point? I understand you've never been a fan of Cam for his alleged criminal history, however you cannot deny his talent and skill over a gift that's been sped up to look intentional..
@lexichik_88; Wow, I do not like Cam. He has gotten away with so much it is shameful. I hate people who do wrong and do not get any type of punishment in any way, football or CEO. Just because someone makes a lot of money does not absolve them from being a criminal or a moron, or a saint. You seem to think he is great because he does make a bunch of money. Nothing could be further from the truth. As a matter of fact it has been noted that people with scads of money tend to get into more trouble than those who don't have it. Drug use is rampant with those who have. Above the law mentality is also. You childish rant about politics and football is just that. I'm not bitter, just logical.
@lonlashum @lexichik_88 I definitely do not make $5.5 million a year, you just sound like a judgemental prick who can't wait to see Cam make mistakes. As a fan I'm not afraid to call you out on it. So stop with the political talk. I know you want to sound all intelligent and defined but don't try to coincide football and politics just because I stated a salary. Facts is facts, you sounded bitter so I called you out on it.
@lonlashum @Simon Head/shoulder? Which was it? Seems like you are trying to make it sound worse. It was clearly his shoulder. If you watch it on tape, it's much easier to see. This gift was sped up just before he kicked to make it look worse. Don't believe me? Then #27 for Oakland (in the background) has the fastest right hook in boxing history.
@lonlashum @lexichik_88
You do realize that Kelly said after the game that the Raiders were trying to hurt Cam. There is a reason Cam kicked him.... And while I'm not calling him Brady just yet, he is already better than a "decent qb, at best." There is a reason he is a top 5 fantasy QB.
@lexichik_88 ; I am not a democrat. I don't envy people for having money. I am a Republcan and believe in free market/capitalism. I think if some fool wants to pay a 2nd stringer 1st stringer pay, go for it. It is pretty pitiful that you think money buys greatness, it doesn't. I also think that, no I bet you are not making 5.5 mil a year to write childish posts on here either. Wanna bet?
@lonlashum And while you continue to point out his mistakes CAM will continue to collect his $5.5 million salary, which I can tell you're bitter about. Pop a Midol, take your tampon out, and have a seat!!
@Simon @lonlashum If that was a pushoff on the shoulder, then Suh was trying to clear some dirt off of that Packers lineman's facemask last year. The defender isn't blameless, no, but that doesn't excuse his childish behavior.
